Western Civilization Timeline Semester 1 has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
I was born on June 24 in the year 1994. An event from the timeline that has impacted my life the most is probably the Industrial Revolution because without it I would not have the things I have today. I wouldn't have a cell phone or computer. Things would have been very different, there wouldn't be as must technology. I chose this event because I think it has influenced my life the most.
France was divided into three estates. The first state was the Clergy and only owned about 10 percent of the land. The second estate was the Nobles and they owned 25 to 30 percent of the land. The third estate, was the commoners and they were divided from there into differences in jobs, wealth and education. The bourgeoisie, which is the middle class, was also part of the third estate. The third estate didn't want to be the only ones paying taxes so they went to a meeting of the Estates-General which was at Versailles. The Declaration of the Rights of Man was created. Some important things that happened were: The Reign of Terror, Napolean rose to power, and Marie Antoinette was sent to the guillotine and was beheaded.
During the Industrialization people went through urbanization, which is when they move from the countryside and into the cities. Factories were made, and men, women and children all had to work in the factories. The conditions in the factories were horrible, 12 to 16 hour days, 6 days per week. There was no minimal wage. When women got the chance to work they got paid very little. I chose to talk about this because it is crazy to think about working under these conditions. Railroads were very important during the Industrial Revolution. They made new jobs, cheaper transport made the goods cheaper, more goods created the need for more factories. Railroads could move 10 tons of ore and 70 people. I chose to talk about railroads because without them we would have no goods.
In the Enlightenment there were many people who were exceptionally intellectual. People such as Thomas Hobbes who though humans were selfish and greedy, and he wanted an absolute ruler to keep people in order and get rid of selfishness. John Locke (pictured) wanted a constitutional monarchy, wanted to protect people's natural right and though if government failed to protect right, they would be overthrown (Rights, Life an Liberty). Montesquieu wanted power divided into three branches because he though too much power in the hands of one person would lead to problems. Voltaire was concerned about the freedom of though and expression, he wanted people to express religion in their own ways (wanted free speech). Beccaria thought it was wrong to punish others more harshly when they had done the same crime as the other people, and he believed that if you murdered a person then you would have to be put to death. Women also had a role in the enlightenment-they stood up for their rights. Some women were: Abigail Adams, Olympe de Gouges and Mary Wollstonecraft. I chose to talk about all of these people because they are the main reason for the Enlightenment and they are important to our world today.
In the Scientific Revolution more modern methods of scientific research or inquiry were created. Scientific Method helped the Scientific revolution more forward. Some people who made a difference were: Copernicus,Galileo, and Sir Isaac Newton.
Copernicus was the one to figure out that the planets orbited around the sun rather than Earth. I chose to talk about him because if he hadn't done that, we would still think we are the center of the universe.
Isaac Newton invented the reflecting telescope. It was more clear and magnified up to 40x better. I chose to talk about this because it is intiguing.

The popes only cared about money and they weren't helping the communities with their religion as they were supposed to be doing. It is important because Indulgences came into play, then Martin Luther came along with the new religion. We have now learned from the pope's mistakes.
Christopher Columbus set out to look for Asia/India but found America instead. Also, slavery began. African Americans were enslaved and had to work for people. The European Exploration began becasue the Europeans wanted a sea route to Asia. Ferdinand Magellan was the first to sail around the world. Some effects on the Americas that happened because of the colonization were things like, millions of Native Americans died, international trade rose, European-Americans got wealthy, and the Native cultures were destroyed. I decided to talk about this because it is American and that is where we live. The three motives for the exploration were: God- Europeans believed they had to bring Christianity to the "new world". Glory-Sense of adventure drew people in. Gold-Individuals wanted to find fortune and Europe wanted silver and gold for trade. I chose to talk about this because without motives the exploration wouldn't have happened.
All of the Native American's had died out and the Euopean's wanted workers. The European's enslaved African slaves. The conditions were horrible, some workers worked on sugar plantations. Almost 12 million Africans were enslaved.

The rebirth of Greece and Rome. Many artists came from this time, such as Leonardo Da Vinci. Reformation happened and the popes only cared about money, they didn't help with peoples religions. The Renaissance helped get things going again. Classical art, architecture and sports came back. Things were better and newer. Leonardo da Vinci was a great artist and is still known to this day. The classical era influenced his art. I chose to talk about Leonardo da Vinci because I love his art. The Reformation started and the popes were makeing mistakes by worrying to much about money. I chose to talk about this becasue I think it is wrong the popes only worried about money, not about the people
During the Middle Ages life was harder, during the dark ages(Middle Ages) there wasn't much moving forward, once got to late middle ages things became more stable. The church was very important during this time. Most of the art was religious during this time.
Because of the Middle Ages the Renaissance era came about. Feudalism declined.
The Bubonic Plague went through Europe during this time, in the year 1346. The black death was spread out by fleas that were living on rats. At the time the Black Death was blamed on the wrong reason, they didn't know about bacteria at the time. I chose to talk about the Black Death because it is scary to think about.
In the middle ages the architecture was known as Gothic Architecture. The churches had pointed towers and some buildings were shaped in the shape of a cross. I chose to talk about Gothic Architecture because the Notre Dame in Paris is Gothic Architecture.

Jesus was brought about, government(seperation of powers), art, sculptures were realistic. New architecture advances were the arch, the dome and the vault. Rome is important to history because Jesus got crucified and the black death was brought about. Jesus was crucified becasue the Romans were afraid that he would be the leader of a revolt. I chose to talk about Jesus because he is a big part of my religion. The art in Ancient Rome had some Greek influence. The statues were influenced by the Greeks, except that the statues were more realistic in Rome, some art the Romans came up with were frescoes, mosaics and murals. I chose to talk about the art in this time because we probably still have some of this artwork today.
Ancient Greeks had many new ideas and accomplishments: Architecture (Parthenon, columns, rectangular in shape), 1st Olympics, 1st Dramas (plays), We still today use Greek architecture (columns, and style at museums, Lincoln memorial). We have the Olympics and wrestling, boxing from them. Also, drama (tv, movies). We also use Greek words/roots in our language (echo). The Olympics came from Ancient Greece, only males could compete and they had to compete nude. They were created to honor the Greek god, Zeus. I chose this event because I love watching the modern day Olympics. Greek Architecture was very interesting. There were three different types of columns they use. Doric columns, Ionic columns, and Corinthian columns. Alot of the building were rectangular. I chose to talk about Greek Architecture because the Parthenon is great to look at.
