1968The purpose of this act was to protect the buyer or renter of a home from landlord discrimination. This act helped Afican Americans buy houses.
- Thurgood Marshall appointed Supreme Court Justice
1967Marshall was the first African American to be a judge on the supreme court. It was a major step for African Americans in the courts.
- Black Panther Party Organized
1966This party was founded in Oakland California. They would patrol streets watching out for police brutality against African Americans. They would also do other things through violence to exercise their rights.
- March on Selma
1965This event consisted of 3 marches. The last one was on March 21st where they made it to Montgomery. Blacks had to overcome violence from police and tear gas.
- Voting Rights Act
1965This was another act that helped African American people vote. This act made it so that you don't have to pass a literacy test to vote.
- Civil Rights Act
1964This piece of legislation ended segregation. It aso helped end unequal voting requirements.
- Freedom Summer
Jun 1964This event was meant to register as many black people as possible to vote. It took place in Missippi and also had the goal of Freedom Schools and Houses to help the black population.
- Twenty Fourth Amendment
Jan 23, 1964This Amndment helped poor African Americans vote. It prohibits having a poll tax.
- March on Washington
Aug 28, 1963The march on Washington had over 250,000 people and was one of the largest demonstrations at the capital. The march was for blacks to be treated equally.
- University of Mississippi integrated
1962The university became integrated because of James Meredith. This also caused riots. He was the first black man to go to the university.
- Freedom Rides
1961Freedom rides were after the Boynton v. Virginia case and were meant to test segregation in the south. Segregation was no longer legal. Freedom rides were bus rides through the south.
- Boynton v. Virginia
1960This case was for a black male who was tresspassing because he was in a whites only restaraunt in a bus terminal. since he was in a bus terminal and bothe blacks and whites can ride the bus, he wasn't guilty.
- SNCC established
Apr 1960SNCC stands for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. They started sit-ins.
- Little Rock Nine
1957The little rock nine were a group of black students at Little rock Central High School. They were escorted into the school by the National Guard and white students shouted threats to them.
- SCLC established
Jan 10, 1957SCLC stands for Southern Christian Leadership Conference. they helped organize the Montgomery bus boycott.
- Murder of Emmett Till
Aug 28, 1955Emmett Till was murdered at the age of 14. The reasoning behind this murder is because he was black and flirting with a white woman.
- Montgomery Bus Boycott
1955The boycott was a protest against the transit system for being racist. Rosa Parks was what made it all start.
- Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas
1954The decision made during this helped end segregation. It made it illegal for schools to segregate black and white children.
- CORE esablished
1942CORE stands for Congress of Racial Equality. It was founded by by James L. Farmer, Jr., George Houser, James R. Robinson, and Bernice Fisher. and Bayard Rustin.
- Nation of Islam created
Jul 1930It's a religion. It was created in Detroit by Wallace D. Fard Muhammad.
- Creation of NAACP
Feb 2, 1909The NAACP was the National Association for the Advancement of Color People. They're mission was "to ensure the political, educational, social, and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination".
- Plessy v. Ferguson
1896This was a major event in the Supreme Court. Racial segregation was legal. people were seperate but equal.
