Oh, these 10 square miles surrounded by reality - also known as Ithaca, New York. What actually happens in this hippyville over the course of twelve months? For the majority of the year, the population doubles when college students take over the hills. And we'll be honest, Ithaca feeds off of college students to give this town a little bit of life. But that's not to say that Ithaca can't have a little fun during the summer. Check out this timeline. Whenever you're in town, Ithaca provides some fun.

• Ithaca Chili Cook-Off and Winter Fest

  Bigger than Black Friday in Ithaca. Go, stand in lines ten or twenty people deep, in the snow, downtown in the commons for a shot glass's worth of chili. Repeat for about three hours. Go back every year to relive the wonderful memories.

  Kick back and grab your kettle corn, ladies and gents. I want to congratulate you. I was down on the Ithaca Commons this Sunday, looking for something to do. I figured, hey, what the heck, I’ll see what’s left of Applefest. I assumed, since it is chilly, windy, and pouring, OBVIOUSLY I’ll be the only one there. Boy was I wrong, Ithaca. Far be it from me to assume that you rascals would let a little rain stand in between you and your produce-related holidays. You’re like if the US Postal Service raised Johnny Appleseed. You came out in DROVES. Huddled under store awnings, eating apple crisp, letting the raindrops plop into your cups of hot apple cider. Most of you didn’t even have umbrellas, Ithaca. You’re no wussies.

  Easily the best thing going on in Ithaca all summer. Enjoy bands like "The Gun Poets," "The Chicken Chokers," and "Big Leg Emma" (yes these are all real band names who have played here) during this four day festival.
