Charles Martel and his Christian Frankish army fought a horrible battle near France. The Franks had controlled the region since the 5th century. The battle may have been only a series of small engagement, but in the end the Muslim advance into Frankish territory was stopped.

The empire was so big, and its government was so complex, that it had difficultly defending its borders from attacks. To help resolve this trouble, the empire split up. Units starting in the late 200's. The Barbarians in 200's had settled along the northern border.
St. Augustine was one of the greatest church leaders in the early Christian Church. In the early 380's he taught rhetoric in Carthage, Rome, Milan, and Italy. He then traveled to Hippo and was persuaded to stay there. He became a priest there in 391.
