After Kossoi died, Gao sent out expeditions in order to gain power of the trans. Saharan trade route. On the opposing end the ruler of Mali, Mansa Musa also tried to conquer the trade route as well. Mansa Musa also tried to gain the power of Gao in order to expand his own kingdom. As his troops were successful the kingdom of Mali spread and rose to ultimate power. This is related to the spread of the kingdoms because; this is the period of time where Mali takes over the kingdom of Songhai and the trans. Saharan trade route. It was the point where Mali expanded dramatically. If this would not have happened, Songhai would have taken over the trade route and controlled the entire import/export. The kingdom then would have used it for their own good and therefore gained in power.
The Tuareg Berbers weekend the kingdom of Mali in the North and the Mossi kingdom took over much of the south, Mali crumbled under this attack. This was the perfect time for Gao's Kingdom (a sub Mali territory) to evolve and take over. Now, finally the Songhai had over powered Mali and rose in power. This relates to the evolution of kingdoms because Mali was the major empires in West Africa. The crumbling and then rise of the kingdom by the Songhai is therefore a key point in history.
A new row of kings were introduced in a sub- Mali territory. These kings were the Sunni's or Shi's. Their mission was it to gain independence from Mali. The second one of these leaders; Sunni Ali finally made it possible and the Kingdom of Songhai emerged, a new era of expansion lay ahead, directed by Sunni Ali. This was definitely relatable to the spread of the kingdoms because, Sunni Ali created a whole new kingdom which would later evolve to be a big and powerful kingdom, it also influenced Mali in a way, because they just won a new opponent in battle for the trans. Saharan trade route.
Mali's King Mansa Musa goes on his most famous pilgramage to Mecca. His goal is to spread the belife of Islam. On this journey he brought 30 thousand pounds of Gold. Throught his journey he gave away free gold as a sign of his gratefulness.
The Berbers/Almoravids dispised the Ghanese and had just converted to Islam. They wanted to spread this belife and therefor declared a jihad(holy war) against Ghana. The kingdom of Ghana never converted to Islam but would let in Muslims without a problem. This is related to the spread of the kingdoms because if the Berbers acctually converted Ghana, the spread of the kingdom in the future would look a lot different.
Dia Kossoi was the one responsible for converting the Songhai Empire to Islam. Many people say he did this in order to have better relations with Berber traders which controlled the caravans and therefore most of the Songhai’s Economy. This impacted the spread of Kingdoms because a new religion also introduced new relationships with other countries. If you have a better relationship with a country you are more likely to bond and become more powerful.
