Today was the day Kevin Rudd apologised to the Aboriginal for all the bad things the white people have done. Here is the speech: That today we honour the indigenous peoples of this land, the oldest continuing cultures in human history. We reflect on their past mistreatment. We reflect in particular on the mistreatment of those who were stolen generations - this blemished chapter in our nation's history. The time has now come for the nation to turn a new page in Australia's history by righting the wrongs of the past and so moving forward with confidence to the future. We apologise for the laws and policies of successive parliaments and governments that have inflicted profound grief, suffering and loss on these our fellow Australians. We apologise especially for the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families, their communities and their country. For the pain, suffering and hurt of these stolen generations, their descendants and for their families left behind, we say sorry. To the mothers and the fathers, the brothers and the sisters, for the breaking up of families and communities, we say sorry. And for the indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people and a proud culture, we say sorry. We the parliament of Australia respectfully request that this apology be received in the spirit in which it is offered as part of the healing of the nation. For the future we take heart; resolving that this new page in the history of our great continent can now be written. We today take this first step by acknowledging the past and laying claim to a future that embraces all Australians. A future where this parliament resolves that the injustices of the past must never, never happen again. A future where we harness the determination of all Australians, indigenous and non-indigenous, to close the gap that lies between us in life expectancy, educational achievement and economic opportunity. A future where we embrace the possibility of new solutions to enduring problems where old approaches have failed. A future based on mutual respect, mutual resolve and mutual responsibility. A future where all Australians, whatever their origins, are truly equal partners, with equal opportunities and with an equal stake in shaping the next chapter in the history of this great country, Australia. There comes a time in the history of nations when their peoples must become fully reconciled to their past if they are to go forward with confidence to embrace their future.
In 1988 Archie Roach (Aboriginal) won the award for singing his song about the stolen generation called 'took the children away' The stolen generation was a long time ago when white people took the aboriginals children away to orphanages to teach them what they thought were the 'proper' things to do, the white people even tried to bread out the aboriginals by making them have babies with white people.
Im not sure what for but faith was also a general secretary from, 1970 to 1973.
This was the year that faith Bandler won her referendum campaign. The campaign was to give the right to Aboriginals to vote. The end result was Yes 90% and No 10%.
In 1967 the Aboriginals were given the right to vote in government and be part of the census and felt they were finally recognised as people of Australia instead of recognised as flora and fauna.
In this year Faith was New South Whales state secretary, she was the secretary from 1962 to 1970. (the picture is of faith's gloves from the 1960's they are now in a museum)
This was when Faith first started her referendum campaign. (Which means it took a very long time for anyone to notice the campaign and it would of been a lot of work to do this.)
Faith was involved in the Aboriginal fellowship. She was a huge help to the aboriginal she was 'instrumental'.
Faith got her first job as a cook and a dress maker!
Today was the day Faith Bandler was born. She was born in Tumbulgum in New South Wales.
Dreamtime is ancient story's that aboriginals use as guide lines for their children. Here is a dreamtime story: There was once a boy and his father was an amazing hunter but the boy was not, he would try day after day but would only fail and he felt that he was a disappointment. then one day the Mimis came and took the boy. His father missed his son so much. So the father's hair grows all the way underground to the Mimis and gets his son back. What this story means: The message of this story is that acceptance shouldn't be experienced by trying to be something or something we aren't.
This was the year that the first fleet arrived to Australia. In the first fleet ship there was over 162,000 convicts, with 806 ships! At the time there was about 300,000 aborigines that populated Australia.
