The most controversial birth on Coronation Street by some margin,
Sarah Louise Platt was only a 12-year old schoolgirl when she fell pregnant by classmate Neil Fearns, later bemoaning that they had "only done it once".
Sarah Louise didn't realise she was pregnant until five months later, when it was too late for an abortion, and so had to give birth to the child.
Although her pregnancy and birth went smoothly, she rapidly realised that her childhood had ended and her life would never be the same again.

Scots producer Brian Park culled a number of well known names when he took over at the show in 1997 and he also introduced Hayley Patterson (Julie Hesmondhalgh) as the first transsexual person in British soap history. Initially seen as a ratings-grabbing gimmick, Hayley quickly won over fans and her storylines highlighted transgender issues. For tax purposes she remained registered as a bloke called Harold - a fact her boss Mike Baldwin was only too glad to highlight. Since marrying Roy Cropper (David Neilson), Hayley has become part of one of the show’s formidable double acts.
