The intial bullet in the Ishrat Jahan case was fired on June 15, 2004 when four people including Ishrat Jahan, a college girl from Maharashtra, were encountered by the Gujarat Police. When asked for a reason the police alleged that they were members of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. A magistrate cried foul and termed the encounter as a 'fake'. An SIT team member filed an affidavit stating the encounter was a fake. Two years after Gujarat High Court ordered CBI to probe the case, it swung into action, arrested and issued warrants against many police officers. Now CBI is all set to file a preliminary charge sheet in the case on July 3, in which it has promised to name the police officers who executed the encounter.
