The breach affects 40 million customers. Target said access to customer information began Nov. 27 -- the day before Thanksgiving -- and was maintained through Dec. 15. Visa and MasterCard investigated a possible security breach with Global Payments, an Atlanta company that helps the two credit card companies process payments for merchants. Visa and Mastercard estimate 1-3 million credit card accounts could have been affected.
TJX Cos. had a breach that began in July 2005. The company runs stores such as T.J. Maxx and Marshall's. The breach was not detected until December 2006. It is estimated at least 45.7 million credit and debit cards were exposed to possible fraud. In June 2009, TJX agreed to a multi-million dollar settlement with multiple states.
