The US military wanted a way to connect all information in one big pot, instead of having it in several databases. This medium became avaliable for the public in the late 1980's.
Unlike other mediums the publishing information was now for free.
In the late 18th century, people used different kinds of telegraphic instruments to communicate with eachother. This was the first easy way to communicate trans-atlantic. With telegraph you payed per "letter", which made it very expensive.
The first modern newspaper was published in the early 17th century. These papers were made by pressing inked letters to a paper. This made it possible to mass-produce newspapers. The first English newspapers were filled with real life drama rather than worldwide news. These papers were called 'Penny Dreadfuls'.
