The new unified Vietnam was officially reunited as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV), with its capital at Hanoi. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Minh City.

Ho Chi Minh died and was replaced by Le Duan, who became the new head of the North Vietnamese Communist Party.
Richard Nixon announced a new policy of Vietnamization to gradually withdraw the more than 500,000 American soldiers from Vietnam and return control of the war to the South Vietnamese ARVN.
While South Vietnam and it's ally the U.S were celebrating the Vietnamese's new year. North Vietnam attacked 27 U.S military bases. This attacked was known as the Tet Offensive.

Vietcong on the U.S became more violent. The U.S president Lyndon B. Johnson ordered an air strike known as the Operation Rolling Thunder in the North Vietnam Area. By the end of the year, U.S had send about 175000 troops to aid South Vietnam.

Diem passed Law 10/59 , establishing military tribunals to search out Communists in South Vietnam, whom he derisively referred to as Viet Cong. These tribunals were unconcerned with justice, and Law 10/59 was brutal in its application.
With the U.S's idea of election. South Vietnam elected Ngo Dinh Diem.
Vietnamese force attack and defeated the French at Dien Bien Phu.
Humiliated at the lost at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. French called for a Geneva Conference. At the conference, diplomats from France, Vietnam, the United States, the USSR, Britain, China, Laos, and Cambodia declared a cease-fire and decided to split Vietnam officially at the 17th parallel, into Communist-controlled North Vietnam and South Vietnam.
French thinks that Ho Chi Minh is a communist. So, they created a new government in South Vietnam. War started between the two sides. This is called the first Indochina war and it lasted for five years.
After World War two. French return to Vietnam and try to recapture it.
With Japan's moral losing in World War 2. Vietnam revolted and defeated Japan. Vietnam gained it's independence. The Democratic Republic of Vietnam were established.
Ho Chi Minh saw an opportunity and created an armed force called Viet Minh or the league for Vietnamese Independence.
Japan took control of Vietnam when France lost to Germany.
