The first school in America is founded in New Amsterdam. This school later became Collegiate School, a private school for boys that still exists.
King Charles I grants Lord Baltimore a royal charter to found the Maryland Colony. Since Baltimore is Roman Catholic, the right to religious freedom is granted to Maryland.
In the Massachusetts Bay Colony issues such as no taxation without representation and representative government are beginning to be addressed.
The Dutch West India Company begins to give land grants to patroons who will bring at least 50 settlers to the colonies.
A group of settlers led by John Endecott settle at Salem, Massachusetts. This begins the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Peter Minuit arrives in New Netherland and later buys Manhattan from the Native Americans for items worth approximately $24. Which would be about $1,000 today. He then names the island New Amsterdam.
First English settlement in New Hampshire is founded by David Thomas.
The Dutch West Indies Company is chartered.
The Pilgrims set sail from England to Cape Cod on the Mayflower. Plymouth Colony is founded in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They make a plan of government called the Mayflower Compact. John Carver was named the first governor of the colony.
The first representative colonial assembly, the House of Burgesses, was formed in Virginia.
Pocahontas marries John Rolfe.
Tobacco planted for the first time by English colonists in Virginia.
All but 60 of the 500 settlers in Jamestown die.
Henry Hudson explores the Delaware Bay and Hudson River.
