King Charles I grants Lord Baltimore a royal charter to found the Maryland Colony. Since Baltimore is Roman Catholic, the right to religious freedom is granted to Maryland.
Peter Minuit arrives in New Netherland and later buys Manhattan from the Native Americans for items worth approximately $24. Which would be about $1,000 today. He then names the island New Amsterdam.
The Pilgrims set sail from England to Cape Cod on the Mayflower. Plymouth Colony is founded in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They make a plan of government called the Mayflower Compact. John Carver was named the first governor of the colony.
