Tony Bacigalupo has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
I wish we could dedicate Memorial Day not to the memory of those who’ve died at war, but to the idea of saving the lives of the young people who are going to die in the future if we don’t find some new way, some new religion maybe, that takes war out of our lives. That would be a memorial day worth celebrating.

I test drove the little lounge area at Green Spaces last night at NY Nightowls. It was certainly loungier, and much more social than the rest of the room, but in between conversation and fits of laughter, some real work was happening, and I’ve come to appreciate the coworking group as much for the times in between the working as I do the times when I’m hunkered down in piles of code and email.

To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.

Guest post from NWC Scavenger Hunter Rob Kelley!
I showed up at 56 W. 22nd street unannounced at 5:00 pm with my daughter on one hand, groceries in another, and wearing a Little Mermaid backpack. Still the super Rocky showed me around. The ten story building is best known for its very popular Baking Supply Store, and secondly as the former offices of KidRobot.Unbeknownst to most, overhead sit three full floors of 5,000 square feet each. Here’s what we found:
2nd floor — empty art gallery space. raw space, but has the tallest ceilings (14ft), and a great view of greenery. And it’s very convenient to walk-up traffic. (pics)
3rd floor — partially built out office. French doors, offices around the perimeter, cubicle areas. Cheerful painted walls. (pics)
10th Floor — KidRobot’s old offices! Desks, graffiti, glass-wall offices, real kitchen, wipe board walls (pics)
All were listed at $28 psf for the full floor of 5,000 sq feet. The second and third floor come with five year leases. KidRobot’s floor is a sublease ending in Feb 2012. This raises some good questions. First, proximity to street. The second and third floor are convenient to the street (easy stair access for meetups, parties, etc); still the 10th floor is patently awesome.Second and more important,is the Flatiron district even an appealing option for members? Rate the nabe! What neighborhoods are good, which are bad?

Coworking space New Work City is moving and Friday night, after I visited Water Taxi Beach, Pepsi We Inspire’s Nichelle Stephens, Julian Young, and I stopped by to pay our respects to the “administration,” Mayor Tony Bacigalupo, Deputy Mayor Peter Chislett, and events coordinator Ana Hevesi. In case you’re wondering, it was held on the building’s roof and not in their soon-to-be-former space. This rooftop by the way has a deck and a gazebo on the part of the roof opposite the stairwell and water tower. Pictured, you’ll see a view of Manhattan’s Midtown neighborhood.

I realized that fundamental to everything I believe in is that we’re here on earth to take care of each other. And we can express that in our politics, or our religions, or songs, or the way we deal with our families and friends and strangers, but the second we stop holding our arms out to catch people as they fall is the second we lose our humanity.

Tests and quizzes, they’ve got role, sure— you want a dipstick see how the kids are doing, give a quiz, absolutely.
But if you want to see what kids have learned, give them a project. Dare them to show you what they can do with the work of their own heads, hearts, and hands.
That’s when you’ll get kids engaged; that’s when you’ll get kids learning; and that’s when you’ll get kids who can change the world.

Do you remember learning in school that you’re born with a finite number of brain cells, and if you lost any of them they were gone forever?
If that struck you as hard to believe at the time, you were right. It’s bunk. You do grow brain cells.
The original scientific research, it turns out, had a variable they never thought to account for. In all the experiments they did, the researchers studied monkeys that lived their entire lives in dull rectangular cages.
Then, many years later, somebody decided to test monkeys who lived natural lives— swinging from trees, interacting with other monkeys, and otherwise living the natural adventurous life a monkey should be living. Guess what? They grew brain cells. Lots of them.
As it turns out, sticking you in a grey rectangular box all day actually rots your brain. It’s scientific fact.
Your brain is like a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it gets. So indulge your brain. Give it a diverse array of experiences so it stays sharp and well-rounded.
Get out of your grey rectangular box. Go swing on some trees.

I was predictably inspired by Scott’s talk on 21st Century Movements at SXSW, and at the end of the panel decided to launch a Meetup so the event’s attendees could share thoughts and advice on their projects.
Four of us met earlier today, and over the course of two hours and some beers and snacks I was inspired and educated.
Below are my notes and ideas, while the inspiration is still fresh:
Burning ManAndie from Burning Man shared their desire to harness the energy of the annual event year-round. She brought up the idea of opening an urban community center, a storefront where they could host events, offer resources, and offer up some coworking space.
Such an effort would be a great way to start growing Burning Man’s activity year-round, and lessons learned from their efforts could be applied to other annual events which also seek to have a less ephemeral existence (BarCamps are a great example).
Take My Idea and Run With ItJeff Friedman told us about a simple idea he had for a fundraiser for his nonprofit: Be Bold Be Bald. They got a bunch of fake bald caps and wore them around town for cancer awareness, and it went well— but before he knew it, people from various cities were contacting him to see how they could start their own.
This phenomenon— trying a cool idea, and then finding that others want to pick up on it and reproduce local versions themselves, represents an opportunity to facilitate the healthy transfer of good ideas among good people.
THE IDEA: An online repository for community event ideas. Share your process and resources, and others can pick up on it, build their own versions, and share their thoughts and techniques. People could even collectively develop a half-baked idea into something actionable.
Ideas could be rated and categorized, so the most effective things bubble up.
I want to build this!
Necessary Evil: You Can’t Save the World Without MoneyWe talked about the tendency to backlash against people who make money doing things that are purportedly for a common good, while the opposite should be the case. If someone is doing something that’s good for the world, we should be wanting to make sure they are doing so in a way that’s sustainable. That means putting a roof over their head and food on their plate.
When people who are good at doing good spend time doing meaningless things to make money, they’re depriving the world of their much-needed assistance. They owe it not just to themselves, but to the rest of us to find ways to maximize their ability to focus on changing the world for the better.
That means finding ways to do so that take money out of the equation. Whether that’s by finding ways to help people that pay them directly, or by finding other ways to get paid that don’t interfere with their do-gooding, clearing the road blocks could mean a huge difference in the impact someone can have.
This is of course relevant to my own situation, and has been the subject of some conversation lately. Finding the right path toward accomplishing what you want to accomplish is something we should all be striving for.

If you are interested in changing the world, you need to surround yourself with people who do not look like you, and who are not always ideologically similar.

The trick is to have real economic impact. Stop thinking of your space as subletting office space to freelancers and two person companies. Instead have the vision to change your city and be a piece of infrastructure for the type of people that are employable for jobs most cities want to have.

I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve. I’ve had such wonderful support by so many people, but the competition this year is really stiff, so it’s time to kick things up! The higher I am ranked in the voting, the later I get to perform on the night of the competition, and the better chances I have of winning.
So here’s what we’re going to do to get things cracking.
Vote for me five times between now and Sunday, and you will get invited to a private karaoke party at an undisclosed location! Only for supporters!
This party will be awesome. And secret.
If you can’t make it to the NYC area, I’m working on ways for you to be able to participate in and enjoy this party anyway. Because you are awesome.
Tell me that you voted by dropping (cc @tonybgoode) on Twitter when you vote, and feel free to add a link to encourage your friends to do so too!
Even better. Create your own bit.ly link to my contestant page (http://cogaoke.com/contestant/tonybgoode), and get bonus points for traffic you drive to that link!
What are the bonus points good for? Well… I honestly don’t know yet. This isn’t fully baked. But the competition ends in 6 days, so we roll with what we got! Suggestions welcome.
But that’s not all.
For my supporters who will be in attendance at SXSW, you will have a chance to participate in the performance. The exact nature of this participation is of course completely top secret, but if you’re going to SXSW you will have a chance to help make the performance truly legendary.
So here’s what to do next:
Every day, do something like this:
Just voted for @tonybgoode, and you should too! http://bit.ly/cogaoke
But you would substitute your own bit.ly link.
I’ll keep track of everything, and let you know about the fabulous benefits you’ll receive as a supporter and participant in this awesome and completely insane effort to get me to the top of the Cog’aoke competition.
Rock on, friends!
Cheers,Tony

By 2013, the total of office-based, non-office-based and home-based mobile workers will grow to nearly 1.2 billion people, representing more than a third of the world’s workforce.

We have become accustomed to the idea that participation in public life comes only in the form of elected office or through lumbering nonprofit organizations. But there is an emergent form of public engagement centered around alignment behind ideas. The Internet has enabled likeminded people to converge both online and in the real world to achieve amazing goals, all without the burdens of machine politics and the slow-moving governance of nonprofits.

Get apps to make your Android more like an iPhoneAndroid 2.0 still doesn’t meet the iPhone as a logically organized, pleasurable to use operating system, but the fact that it’s open source allows developers to close many of the gaps. For instance:
aHome: Customize the hell out of your home screen, including lots of skins to make it more iPhone-like.
Better Keyboard: Skinnable, customizable replacement to the default Android keyboard.
TuneWiki: A media player that better matches the iPhone’s iPod interface than the rudimentary media player that ships with Android by default.
HandCent SMS: Skinnable SMS/MMS program that, unsurprisingly, offers iPhone-like skins.
Twitdroid: Let’s be honest, leaving Tweetie on the iPhone may hurt more than any other one thing. Soften the blow by using a pretty damn good Android stand-in, Twitdroid.
Do things the iPhone can’t do, and love it
Stream Pandora while running other apps. Use Astro to access the file system directly on the phone. Love Google Voice’s full integration. Bask in the turn-by-turn navigation on Google Maps. Install G-Backup and have all of your texts, photos, calls and more automatically backed up to Gmail, and suddenly everything you do on your phone is backed up and searchable forever. Install Locale and customize your phone’s behaviors based on where you are in the world, using GPS and background processing (a killer combo that iPhone can’t match).
What other apps am I going to get?
- Foursquare- Wapedia- OpenHome- Amazon- Power Manager- Ringdroid- ShareBoard- NESoid- RoboDefense- ShopSavvy- Qik
Now that I’ve compiled this list, I’m pretty excited about picking up a Droid. I might need to spend a little more time with it in the store, but these apps are making the Droid look better than ever.

What I said:
“I said hip, hop, the hippy, the hippy, to the hip hip hop and you don’t stop a rockin to the bang bang the boogie said up jump the boogie to the rhythm of the boogedy beat. Om nom nom nom.”
What Google Voice heard:
I said it. Hi up and they did. It’d be a hip, hip, hop and you don’t stop elected to and able to set up something because of the book, the debate. I don’t know. I’m not involved. Com.
