Olaus and Mardy Murie conduct scientific studies on the Sheenjek River accompanied by Bob Krear, Brina Kessel, and George Schaller. The group studied the land and hatched a plan to protect it. Supreme Court Justice William O Douglas visited them and began speaking on behalf of the land.
National Park Service Recommends that the undisturbed lands in the northeastern corner of Alaska be preserved for their wildlife, wilderness, recreation, scientific, and cultural values.
In the 1950’s, George Collins, and Lowell Sumner, two National Park Service scientists, explored an area of Alaska from the Brooks Range north, and published a paper titled Northeast Alaska: The Last Great Wilderness in which they identified the undisturbed northeast corner of Alaska as the best opportunity for protection.
