Love doesn't hurt. It kills.
GIRLS VS BOYS plunges you into an all-out war of the sexes. Brother and sister find themselves thrust into a perilous, modern day Lord of the Flies, playing a game with rules they don't fully understand. But you can't win this game. You gotta play not to lose. The acclaimed creative team of The Sparrow, along with Northwestern students, has created a story of high stakes relationships with even greater consequences, challenging the storybook ideal of love in an amped up, exhilarating new musical.

Northwestern's 151st commencement looked to be a washout early in the day. But as the thunderstorms of June 19 passed and the skies finally brightened, graduates and guests enjoyed an abbreviated ceremony highlighted by internationally renowned musician Wynton Marsalis.
After joking about being "appropriate to the situation" -- many portions of the event were shortened as an evening storm rolled in -- Marsalis read from just the first and last pages of his prepared remarks.
Marsalis urged members of the class of 2009 to soak up the moment, reminding them of all they have accomplished in donning the cap and gown.
"This evening, graduates, you fulfill the promise of this university's legacy, justify the optimism of your ancestors, reward the investment of your parents, deepen a kinship with your peers and provide inspiration for younger generations who will benefit from your example," he said.
The Ryan Field crowd cheered loudest when Marsalis pulled out his trumpet and peformed “The Second Line," a traditional New Orleans tune inviting everyone to dance at the end of a concert. Professor Victor Goines, director of jazz studies, accompanied on saxophone.
Marsalis received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree. He was among seven distinguished individuals to receive an honorary degree.

Recently released Iranian-American journalist and Medill alumna Roxana Saberi was awarded the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism at the June 20 convocation of Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
Saberi, who until May 11 was in an Iranian prison, delivered brief remarks at the convocation ceremony. Katharine Weymouth, CEO and publisher of the Washington Post, was the event's featured speaker.
Saberi -- who earned a master's degree in journalism from Medill in 1999 -- worked as a journalist for National Public Radio, British Broadcasting Corp. and other news outlets until her arrest by the Iranian government in February.
On April 18, she was convicted of espionage, and sentenced to eight years in prison. Saberi was released when an appeals court suspended her sentence to two years.
"We are honored to welcome Roxana Saberi home to Medill and recognize her courage both as an alumna and as a dedicated journalist," said Medill Dean John Lavine.
Throughout Saberi's ordeal, Northwestern and Medill faculty, staff and students spoke out against her imprisonment and, on April 23, held a rally in support of her release.
Medill annually awards its Medal for Courage for outstanding moral, ethical or physical courage in pursuit of a story to an individual or team of journalists working for a U.S.-based news outlet. The decision to award a special, out-of-cycle medal is a testament to Saberi's personal and journalistic resilience.
The 2008 medal winner was Cleveland Plain Dealer journalist Joanna Connors for "Beyond Rape: A Survivor's Journey." That series explored not only trauma Connors experienced but also issues of race and privilege raised by the crime against her.

We first met Mari Fagel as a prospective Northwestern student in our fall 2005 issue. Since then she's become an award-winning reporter and anchor on Northwestern News Network. She worked on NBC’s presidential election coverage at the Democratic and Republican conventions and the election-night rally in Chicago's Grant Park. Fagel also worked with Fox News Chicago special projects reporter Mark Saxenmeyer on in-depth investigative stories. And during senior year she worked as a general assignment reporter at KSNT-TV in Topeka, Kan., for her journalism residency.
“Northwestern fully, fully prepared me for what I want to do,” Fagel says. “People at the station tell me how lucky I am to go to Northwestern. Thanks to Medill, I know how to edit, I know how to write, I know how to shoot, and I know how to be on-air. Medill has really prepared me.”
