Ponyboy’s parents died in a car crash, Ponyboy and his 3 brothers live together by themselves. His 20 year old Brother is the head of the family. After coming from a movie A blue Mustang drives by them. Cherry's and Marcia's boyfriends Bob and Randy get out of the mustang.
Later that night Ponyboy walks home and finds Darry angry with him for staying out so late. While they were both arguining, Darry slaps Ponyboy right across the face. No one in Ponyboy’s family has ever hit him before. He then runs out of the house in a rage. Ponyboy goes to the lot where he finds Johnny. He tells him that were running away. Johnny, who is the son of an alcoholic father, ensures Ponyboy that he will go with him.
