In the Holy Bible, we read that the Virgin Mary, before becoming the future mother of Jesus Christ, was visited by an angel. Therefore, it seems appropriate during the season of Advent, in preparation for Christmas, to take a closer look at angels. The Rev. Debbie Low-Skinner will offer a three-week Christian Education class called Angels in the Bible and in Everyday Life. We will explore such topics as:
What are angels?
Who are the archangels?
What kind of angels make up the angelic hierarchy?
Where are angels mentioned in the Holy Bible?
Are angels still around today?
Classes are open to everyone and will be held on Sundays, December 4, 11, and 18 at 12:00-12:45 pm in the Rector’s Office

Over 800 backpacks, filled with school supplies and shoe vouchers, were personally dropped off by scores of volunteers from local Livermore congregations. St. Bart's folks, too, were present to deliver some three dozen backpacks. Many thanks to Alice & Tom Williams, Lanny Thompson, Cynthia Bird, and Mother Debbie & Don Skinner for helping to make the deliveries. Thanks also to our children and youth who stuffed the backpacks last month, (pictured are some of the stuffers, showing off the backpacks). And, of course, the generous parishioners who funded 45 backpacks. Together we have made a difference in the lives of some 80 disadvantaged students.

Fourteen children explored God's word through the theme “God & Me @ Sea” (a 16% increase in attendance over last year).
On the first day of VBS, we went to sea with God…to meet the fish that He just created!
On the second day, we went to sea with God again…this time with Noah and all he had to put up with on the Ark.
On day three, we went on a rough ride at sea…with Jonah in the belly of the whale.
On the fourth day, we witnessed one of the greatest miracles of the New Testament…Jesus walking on water.
And on the final day of VBS, the seas were finally calm, Jesus calmed them…as He will surely calm us.
We had a great time learning about God through our adventures at sea and our last day water balloon bonanza!

Pentecost 2011 coincided with the Livermore Rodeo weekend. So we adopted a western theme and started the weekend off with a BBQ dinner. Then on Sunday, everybody wore red for Pentecost and after the service cooled off with an ice-cream social.

Fully Rely on God (FROG) was our theme for VBS this year. We had 12 children attend, an increase of 33% over our 2009 attendance.
Children participated in activities that helped them to Fully Rely on God. Through stories of the Three Faithful Men, Daniel and the Lions, David and Goliath, and the 23rd Psalm, the children learned how trusting in GOD will always work in your favor. They learned to trust themselves, trust others and to trust in God’s love.

After nearly 10 years without a Vacation Bible School, St. Bart's reinvented its VBS program with the Creation story. Genesis, Chapter 1 --VBS Version: In the beginning God created St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. And God said, Let there be VBS: and there was VBS. And God saw that it was good. God divided the VBS into 4 days. He called the first day Monday, June 15th and the last day He called Thursday, June 18th. And God divided each of the 4 days into 3 hours, the first being 9am and the last being 12pm. And God said let those hours be filled with Bible stories, crafts, games, music and snacks: and it was so. And God said, Let the church bring forth abundantly the moving creatures of St. Bartholomew's that hath life that they may volunteer and be glad. And God blessed them, saying, Be helpful and caring, and fill the children’s VBS with fun and learning at this church. And God said, Let the children under the heaven, age 3 to grade 5, be gathered together unto one place, to learn and to grow, and let that place be St. Bartholomew’s: and it was so. And God said, let the community of St. Bartholomew's bring forth juice for drinking, goldfish and animal crackers for eating, and the fruit of the apple tree and gummy fruit snacks of all kinds: and it was so. And God called forth the gathering together of toilet paper and paper towel rolls, white copier paper and string or wool yarn, cardstock paper and cotton balls; and it was so. And the community brought forth those things that were needed and placed them in the Sunday school area and God saw that it was good. And God commanded that those with questions and comments should make them known to the VBS coordinator. And God saw every thing that had been done, and, behold, it was very good.

Before his retirement, Bishop Swing visited St. Bartholomew's, conducted two baptisms and blessed the new parking lot, new side doors, memorial garden and Brian's Fountain.
A parking lot was finally built at the back of the church.
Two sets of double doors were installed during a capital campaign, adding additional light and access to the sanctuary. The doors were blessed by Bishop Swing in January 2006.
Diane Coburn visualized an ever-flowing stream of water to commemorate the life of Brian Barber. Brian's fountain was built in 2004 under the shade of giant eucalyptus trees. A sparkling stream of water flows constantly along the grooves of the rock, tracing the imprints of leaf fossils.

The Interfaith Thanksgiving Service took place at First Presbyterian Church in Livermore. It was an extravaganza of wonderful cultures, customs, music, and celebration.
Music from the Living Waters String Band played in the parish hall where a pot luck dinner was served. An old fashoned sing-along and instrument jam also took place.
Wednesday evening Lenten Series took place from March 1 to April 4. A soup supper was followed by a mid-week communion, then discussion centered on the video series "Wrestling with Angels." Rev. Ralph Calabrese let the series.
The beginning of the St. Bart's Music Series began at 3pm on Sunday, Feb. 20th. The first concert featured Phyllis Harding and her clarinet ensemble. Since the new altar is moveable (and re-movable) it is easy to take advantage of the sanctuary's marvelous acoustics and present community musical events.
According to the minutes of Oct 16 2000, St. Bart's converted from Mission to Parish on Oct 21, 2000.
St. Bart’s participated in the Livermore Rodeo Parade for the second year. The kids rode in the back of a pickup driven by Peggy Morrow, Mother Carol rode her bike along with Bev and John Psenak. Grace Sprehn was on roller-blades. Kip West was the queen of the truck. Other participants included Brett Morrow, Bob Aring, Susan Sprehn, Gail Sutton and the whole Gully-Morden clan.

St. Bart’s joined with St. Timothy’s and St. Clare’s, and with our corporate sponsor and funds provider, California State Automobile Association, to do some renovation on the Dempsey home in Livermore. A group of over 60 volunteers repaired leaks in the garage roof, replaced the damaged garage door and cleaned up the yard. (**Christmas in April is an annual, one-day project to repair homes of those who cannot do the work for themselves, due to age, disabilities, and financial hardship...It is now called Rebuilding Together San Francisco).
