For Steuben, Allen has designed a crystal Piggy Bank just as whimsical as his other work, most notably his cast metal piggy bank for Areaware. Allen says of the Steuben pig that “he is very cute and very Steuben.” Instead of a coin slot you put the money into the pig’s snout. As Allen says, “He is just hungry for your money!” Steuben is launching a companion piece to Allen’s Piggy Bank this fall, called A Penny Saved. Allen is more than happy to “capitalize on what Steuben does best – handmade glass.”

Twelve designs in an ongoing series Studies in Crystal signify a change of design direction for Steuben. By 1970 the collection will eventually grow to include over two hundred works. Free from functional purpose, these pieces include both engravings on prismatic forms and free sculptural abstractions. While Steuben continues to produce a large and varied line of tableware, vases, bowls and other utilitarian objects, these new, purely decorative pieces allow the company to exploit glass' potential as a medium for sculpture.
