From its inception in 1997, the World AIDS Campaign was managed by UNAIDS and focused on raising public awareness on specific issues related to HIV and AIDS, such as the importance of fighting stigma and discrimination and the disproportionate impact of AIDS on women and girls. Over the years, feedback from campaigners has suggested that the World AIDS Campaign has helped influence the international agenda around HIV and AIDS but due to its global nature and, to some degree, its close association with UN agencies, the Campaign sometimes fell short of reaching its full potential at a national and local levels. As a result, in 2004 the World AIDS Campaign became an independent NGO, based in the Netherlands. In 2007 the WAC opened its office in Cape Town, South Africa Our goal is to ensure governments and policy makers meet the targets they have agreed and mobilise the resources required in the response to HIV and AIDS.
