In the Treaty of Verdun, Charlemagne's three grandsons, the sons of Louis the Pious, the vast Carolingian Empire was divided into three kingdoms. Lothair received the Middle Frankish Empire. Louis the German received the eastern portion, which later became Germany. Charles the Bald received the western portion, which later became France.
