It was written with great care and in great detail by MichaelH on the news section and is reproduced verbatim here. For those of you that do not know Michael’s work, his work on the Codex and his help with WordPress and its documentation makes him a legend in my books. Thank you Michael!]
These questions and answers were gleaned from the wp-hackers and wp-testers e-mail lists over that last several weeks.
Q. How can I find the Post ID or Page ID?
A. If your browser shows the URL in the status bar, when you mouse over a link, you can see the ID in the as part of the URL displayed in the browser status bar. In FireFox you can show the status bar by checking the Status bar choice under View. A more complicated method to finding the ID is to use something like phpMyAdmin to look at the database table wp_posts–look down the column of post_title to find your Post or Page Title. The ID field on that row will be your Post (or Page) ID.
Q. How do I find the Category ID?
A. In Manage->Categories, place your mouse over the Category Name you are trying to find the ID for and the ‘cat_ID’ will show as part of the URL displayed in the browser status bar. In FireFox you can show the status bar by checking the Status bar choice under View. A more complicated method to finding the Category ID is to use something like phpMyAdmin to look at the database table wp_terms and find the row where name column is your Category Description. The term_id on that row will be your Category ID.
Q. How can I edit my Post slug or my Page slug?
A. The Post (or Page) slug is now displayed as the Permalink under the Title field in writing or editing a Post or Page. If you are using the “Default” Peramlink Settings you will not see and can’t edit the Permalink. Only if you are using a ‘pretty Permalink’ (e.g. Month and name) in Settings->Permalinks will the Permalink be available for edit. When creating a new Post or Page, the Permalink field won’t show up until you complete the Title.
Q. Where are my Post Categories and Tags when writing a Post?
A. Scroll down below the Post content box.
Q. How do I rearrange the order Advanced Options boxes like Custom Fields and Excerpt?
A. This is no longer possible.
Q. I don’t see a link to edit a user’s name.
A. In the table of Users, click on the name (represented as a link), to edit that user’s information.
Q. What happened to my Import Links ability?
A. Export Links is displayed under the Related section on the Write->Link screen
Q. Where’s the menu tab to access the Dashboard?
A. The link to the Dashboard is in the dark border at the top left of the screen.
Q. What happened to my child categories? I had the Category Ford both as a Child of New Cars, and as a Child of Old Car, but I can’t do that any longer?
A. Duplicate Category (and Tag) names are not longer allowed.
Q. I can’t upload certain file types and get message “File type does not meet security guidelines. Try another”
A. Unknown file extensions are ‘blocked from uploading’. New extensions and their icons can be added via changes to the functions wp_check_filetype and wp_ext2type in wp-includes/functions.php.
Q. How can I change that red banner in the Dashboard?
A. Change to the ‘Classic’ Admin Color Schemes in Users->Your Profile.
Q. What happened to my Options choices?
A. Options are now called Settings and that menu tab is to the right on your menu next to Plugins and Users.
Q. How do I edit a Category Description?
A. Under Manage->Categories, click on the Category Name you wish to edit.
Q. How do I edit a Comment?
A. Under Comments, click on the name of the comment author and then you will be placed in ‘Edit Comment’ mode.
Q. Where is the WordPress Bookmarklet?
A. It’s gone for now but will likely be available in Version 2.6 but see Dion Hulce’s suggestion in the Forums.
Q. When in the Media Library, what is this error — Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wp_get_attachment_image() in /home/public_html/wp-includes/post-template.php on line 384
A. This is usually caused by a PHP file not being correctly uploaded. Make sure wp-includes/media.php and wp-settings.php are intact (reupload them).
Q. When trying to upload media files I get the message “Are you sure you want to do that?” with a link telling me to try again. Clicking “Please try again” simply reloads the dashboard into the frame.
A. You may need to disable your plugins one-by-one to find the ‘problem’ plugin. Some older plugins, such as Ryan Duff’s old WP-Contact plugin, have been reported to cause this problem, so check under the Plugins tab to see if your Plugins need updating.
Q. Has the option to enable/disable Gzip compression been removed from 2.5?
A Yes, the option is gone. WordPress now leaves compression as a decision for the server.
Q. Why can’t I add media in Manage->Media Library?
A. This was planned for 2.5 but didn’t make it into code so this will be included in a future release.
Q. How do I add links to my Blogroll?
A. A new menu choice, Write->Link, allows creation of new Links. In Manage->Links, there is an “add new” link to the right of the Manage Links heading. Also remember the new Manage->Link Categories to add and maintain Link Categories.
Q. What happened to the Post Timestamp box? How do I change the Post Timestamp?
A. In Write->Post, in the Publish Status area, click on the Edit button to the right of Publish immediately. When editing a Post, there is a similar edit button in the Publish Status area next to the Published on date and time.
Q. My screen is using 1280×960 pixels and I notice that admin screens are left aligned, not centered or stretched 100%.
A. This is the intended design. Viper007bond has Remove Max Width Plugin to change this.
Q. The collation set in “wp-config.php” (DB_COLLATE) is not being used in searches.
A. This will be likely be fixed in 2.5.1 but see this thread at wp-testers for a suggested fix.
Q. I get a “403 Forbidden” error when uploading files. I am also using the Bad Behavior plugin.
A. May need to delete the “Shockwave Flash” from the Bad Behavior blacklist file. See Rick Beckman’s post for a detailed description.
Q. I just tried to upload several media file and my browser crashed when it got to the “Crunching” part.
A. It is possible your system doesn’t support the Flash uploader or needs an upgrade to your Flash Player. Dion Hulse also wrote the the No Flash Uploader plugin to disable the Flash uploader.
Q. I can’t edit the Post slug/permalink and I’m sure I’m using pretty permalinks
A. To help debug the problem, answer these questions. What is your permalink structure? Can you provide the permalink for a post that does not show the Permalink field in the editor? Do you get any JS errors in the console? If you have plugins activated, does the problem persist if they are deactivated?
Q. The Change button (beside the Remove button) in Design->Widgets isn’t working. When I click change (beside remove button) it doesn’t save the changes to the widget.
A. Clicking Change doesn’t actually do a save and reload. You have to click “Save Changes” at the bottom to make the changes stick.
Q. In older versions, below widgets we had the option to select how many ‘Text’ widgets we want to use, but I don’t see that in 2.5.
A. The option is no longer needed. Widgets that allow multiple instances (e.g. Text widget) can be added as many times as you like by just clicking on the Add button. Remember to “Save Changes” when done adding the widgets.
Q. Can I revert from Version 2.5 to Version 2.3.3?
A. The best way is to restore your 2.3.3 database and files. If that is not possible, then any user that accessed the 2.5 blog or was added in 2.5 would need the MD5 password reset in the user table.
Q. I have several production blogs using Version 2.3.3 and I just upgraded to Version 2.5 on one of those blog. All the blogs share a common user table for the user names and passwords, but when I login to the Version 2.5 blog with a user, why can’t I use that same user to login to the 2.3.3 blogs.
A. Version 2.5 has enhance the password authentication so the passwords created/used for a 2.5 blog will not work on a 2.3.3 blog. Ryan wrote MD5 Password Hashes plugin to use the old password hashing (like what is used in Version 2.3.3) in a Version 2.5 blog.
Q. How do I add a youtube video to a 2.5 Post?
A. In the HTML mode, paste the youtube URL (youtube tells you this) into the post. In the Visual mode, paste the youtube URL into the popup activated when you click on the “Insert/edit embedded media” icon on the 2nd toolbar row.
In addition to these questions and the provided answers, if you have any new ones that you would like to add, please leave us a comment and we will add them to the list.
["dt*b7c5d3c55ae2ffca"]},"99f1bdbb3e1694ba":
iBox
iBox is plugin that allows you to create overlays of images, html pages, inline layers and YouTube videos or any other flash videos. As of 10.5, though, you can just use the dot_clean command on the directory in question. Type dot_clean /path/folder to join the dot-underscore files with their parent files. Depending on what kind of web space maintenance type person you are, you may or may not have upgraded immediately.Today's big admission at Download Squad is that some of us, ahem, ignored the Upgrade Now! link for the last two weeks. It wasn't that we didn't care. It wasn't that we didn't think it was important. We usually love the opportunity to click on new buttons and thingamahoosies and break them see what they do. What was it, then? Was it laziness?Pfft. Yeah. Probably. But hot on the heels of the 2.5 release comes lots of talk and flurry about WP 2.6. It's something that would strike a lot of users as odd. Sure, developers have roadmaps, and plans, and direction for future releases well before current releases are completely polished. It usually takes a little more than two weeks for those sorts of things to be laid out on the table. It would strike people as odd if they hadn't already laid their eyes upon the radically different 2.5 dashboard.Continue reading WordPress 2.5 released, and all eyes turn to 2.6Permalink | Email this | Comments

["dt*b7c5d3c55ae2ffca"]},"95a98946008b66f3":
The New York Times' Shifting Careers column interviews Peggy Klaus, author of The Hard Truth About Soft Skills and noted proponent of the power of blogging, about the "soft skills" that everyone—especially the productivity-obsessed among us—can use occasional coaching on. Among the questions is one that any freelancer or over-scheduled office worker has probably pondered: How do you tell a boss or an important client that you can't tackle a project, whether due to deadlines, preferences, or nearly any other reason. Klaus' response:The key is to express your interest and appreciate that they've asked you, making sure to leave the door open for some time in the future. Origin, original, beginning, it all seemed a bit obvious…but I liked that about it.” In other words, the root concept lies in the connection between the meaning of the word origin, Courbet’s titling, and contemporary interest in appropriation. The work marries Courbet’s, L’origine du Monde , with Rene Magritte’s generative 1929 painting, La Trahison des Images . This particular piece has quite a bit of history behind it, so I’ve posted the write up from the artist’s website below.
Birth of a New Museum has an interesting history. In the early Nineties, when he was an art student at Hunter College, Noterdaeme invented an eccentric alter ego for himself, a certain Marcellus Wasbending-Ttum, a painter and self-proclaimed “Homoplagiarist.” Under this alias, Noterdaeme created multiple works, some of which he painted himself, some of which, like Birth (originally titled Self-Portrait), were executed to his specifications by a hired professional. When Noterdaeme, acting as Marcellus Wasbending-Ttum, presented the Hunter faculty with this “Self-Portrait,” he found himself accused of plagiarism and was prematurely expelled from the MFA program. Embittered, Noterdaeme destroyed all his artworks - with the notable exception of Self-Portrait - and, for the next ten years, abstained from making art, working as a museum educator for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. In 2002, Noterdaeme created his own museum, the Homeless Museum of Art (HoMu). When he eventually turned his rental apartment in Brooklyn into a showcase for HoMu, he gave the painting a place of honor in the apartment’s High Gallery and renamed it Birth of a New Museum.
["dt*b7c5d3c55ae2ffca"]},"33d8f9d9c4a21037":
Filed under: Security, Blogging, web 2.0The WordPress team has released version 2.5.1 of the blogging software. His talk was not on Woopra but he introduced it to the event in a very short, three minute spiel. Since then Woopra has generated a tremendous amount of buzz in blogging circles. In short, Woopra is a stats tool for websites that lives as an application on your desktop (among other places) and can provide live webstats on your visitors. I like it since it is fast and since the developers gave me an opportunity to look at the insides early on, I have developed quite a fondness for it. They are in growth mode and with the recent upgrade to their desktop client, they can support more locations and are in the process of approving a large number of new users for their service.
All of that being said, with my previous knowledge of Woopra and its capabilities, I was literally floored this afternoon by a flood of new “stuff” that I had either completely missed or capabilities that were added in this new release. So if you are a Woopra user (or if you are not, just sign up), pull up a chair, grab a cup of your favorite beverage and read on. This is pretty cool.
All of the following assumes that you have an active Woopra account, are using WordPress, have the WordPress plugin installed and have the Woopra application (1.1.1.0) installed on your machine.

With Woopra, and the Woopra WordPress Plugin, you can monitor all your registered users and all your commenters. This sounds obvious/relatively mundane until you install the plugin on your WordPress blog and create an event notification on the application. Follow the bouncing ball.

Open up your Woorpa application, click on the manage tab on the left and then click on Create a new Event Notification.
Then type in “Known Visitors” into the label box, click Next.
On the next window, click and activate the checkbox next to “Visitor is tagged or is a member” and click next until you come to the “Edit Notification’s look and feel” screen.
Here click on the “Notification’s Icon” dropdown to click on “visitor’s Avatar” and then paste the following in the “Custom notification message” box: Visitor %NAME% is viewing %PAGETITLE% Then click on Apply Notification button

Now you will receive a notification on your desktop whenever a registered user or a user who has left a comment, visits your blog. This gets even cooler when you notice their gravatar shows up on the notification and you are now able to track these known visitors are they traverse through your blog. You can even choose to initiate a web chat with these visitors through the Woopra application. The chat shows up on their browser. This is cool and scary at the same time.
Another cool new tool I discovered today was the little map of the world on the top left corner of the “live” tab. Now I had noticed the map there but had not looked into it much. Look for a small arrow on the top right corner of that map. Once you click on that arrow, the map opens up to a full screen view and now you are able to use your mouses’ scroll wheel to zoom in on any part of the map and use your cursor to identify users. I could spend hours doing this on a busy day.
I had noticed the small column of labels at the top right hand corner of the Woopra desktop application but had not paid much attention to it. The lowest item on that list is called “live” and once clicked it shows the number of users on your blog on a moving bar graph, much like whos.amung.us
The analytics tab has a bunch of hidden gems. Some newer features were also added to the items on this tab. Click on the Analytics tab on the Woopra application and look for the following:

The “referrers” tab now has a few new subtabs. They include regular stats stuff like webpages, domains and search engines. But now this tab also include Feed Readers, Emails, Social Bookmarks, Social Networks, Media, News and Communities. Each one of these intrigued me and the I was taken aback by the breakdowns of referrals from various applications. The Email tab gave me the most food for thought. If your blog has email readers or you publish regular newletters via email, this tab could help you identify reader populations from various email services. Clicking on the graph part of the display brings up a historical view.
The “pages” tab breaks up visitors by subdirectories. With WordPress’ permalinks, you can now determine how hard your yearly archives are working for you. Apparently, over a thousand people looked at my archives from 2003 this week. As your data grows, this tab could contain breakdowns by tag, by author and any other permalink features that you have enabled through your blog. I wonder why our WordPress tag is so popular?
The last tab to point out is “systems”. Now this data can be mundane and almost all stats programs offer some sort of systems breakdown. Woopra adds to this functionality by letting you find permutations of systems options. This blog receives more Chinese speaking, Internet Explorer 6 users on Windows XP than any other language. I will be using that information to my advantage, I am sure you can find your particular niche to help or enhance.

Woopra is a great tool. It is even better with these little tidbits. There are literally thousands of different ways to enhance your stats and understand your reader population better. I have just outlined a few that I had completely missed till today.
Have you found any cool new tricks for Woopra that you would like to share?
["dt*b7c5d3c55ae2ffca"]},"023f685c57af0f97":
Editor Keith Olwell and Executive Producer Elizabeth Kiehner have teamed up to helm Proton Studio, a full service editorial resource with expanded creative capabilities including sound design and finishing, as well as a road-worthy, full capacity studio for working remote situations. If an organization or an individual seeks a new design, they hold a “contest” of sorts using the tools built into 99 Designs and offer up some money for their project. Designers are then allowed to post entries for these and the contest holder is allowed to pick and choose the best design(s) and distribute the money based on the winning design. In the past designers have turned up their nose on design contests for a variety of reasons, most of which I agree with. However, the surprising thing about 99 Designs is the popularity of the site and the sheer number of designs that have been submitted for existing contest. Some of the work submitted is top notch. My question for designers is to find out whether competition has become so fierce and economic conditions so strained that contests are now fair game or have the rules changed a little? If you have WordPress knowledge and are interested in writing a post for Hack WordPress, please contact us.
I recently wrote my first guest post for Hack Wordpress, which didn’t really go as smoothly as planned. I made an honest mistake about copyrighted images, which lead me to think that the readers at Hack WordPress could use a good lesson from my blunder and not fail where I did.
I’m now ashamed to admit it - yep, I’ve used copyrighted images before. This is dangerous in the sense that your reputation can end up a bit banged up (hehe…), but can also result in legal action. Whoa, if you’re not careful what image you use, you can get sued? Yep. But in this day and age, there’s a ton of non-copyrighted images out there that are published under Creative Commons that can be used.
The Solutions
Not to worry - I’ve got a solution for you. My primary solution, YotoPhoto, is down at the moment (and has been for a while now) - so I ended up actually having to do some research to find some alternative resources.
I chose to bring up image search engines instead because I feel that as bloggers, none of us have enough time to browse around entire stock image sites. For those that have time, I personally find SXC.hu to be a great stock image site - best of all, it’s free! Also, some photos on Flickr published under the Creative Commons license can be used freely. If you’ve got any other free stock image sites to suggest, feel free to list them in a comment.
ReadWriteWeb’s got a great set of reviews on YotoPhoto and four other alternatives - Xcavator which searches iStockPhoto.net, everystockphoto which searches through licensed Creative Commons images, PicFindr which runs through free-to-use stock images but also Dreamstime images if you prefer, and FotoSearch which examines pay images . Click here to read the article.
I personally also enjoy using the Photo Dropper Wordpress plugin, allowing you to search through Flickr Creative Commons licensed images right from your blog’s dashboard.
Conclusion
If you’re looking for stock/creative commons-licensed images to take your post content to the next level, then why not give these search engines a try? However, if you want to take advantage of image SEO, then I won’t guarantee these will make the cut for you.

---
Enjoy writing about WordPress? Once upon a time they were a search engine and internet portal, just like Google and Yahoo! And today they're... well, actually they're still around, much to our surprise. And today the company launched its most interesting product in ages: an online video site with a social twist.
When you start watching a movie in Lycos Cinema, you can invite friends to watch along with you, no matter where they are. The video will play back on all of your computers at almost exactly the same instant. So users can chat about the movie in real-time as they watch. The person who starts the movie can pause, rewind, and fast forward the video stream. And the controls are almost instantaneous. If you've got a broadband connection, you can skip ahead to the end of a movie in just a matter of seconds, with no buffering.
The site features both free and paid content. When you rent a movie, you can pay one fee for a one person rental, another for "5 seats," and the top price for "10 seats." The prices seem reasonable, topping out at around $6 for 10 seats. But there's one major problem. The content sucks. We're talking, makes Joost, and even Babelgum look good sucks. The most exciting thing we could find in the free content was a Godzilla movie. The rental store content is about as fresh, with titles like Convoy and Monster from a Prehistoric Planet in the featured content section. However, in the end everybody needs one, so it’s important to know which editor is best tailored to your personal needs.
WYSIWYG-editors are often criticized by real coding ninjas for bloated, dirty and not standards-complaint source code they’ve been producing over the last years. However, WYSIWYG-editors have become much better recently. Some of them even produce valid and elegant code.
Sometimes you need to provide your clients with some simple tools to edit or update their web-sites. And this is where the utility of WYSIWYG-editors comes in. As a web-professional you need to provide your clients with some sophisticated advice and offer a simple yet effective tool — e.g. a WYSIWYG-editor.
We believe that it would be wrong to recommend you some “best” editors, because the choice always depends on your requirements, primary goals, skills and experience. Therefore in this article we’ve tried to give you an overview of both useful and deprecated WYSIWYG-editors.
Hopefully, you’ll find some editors you’ve never heard about before. Or maybe you’ll find some features you miss in your current editor and risk to experiment with some promising alternatives to improve your workflow. Besides, you can learn what editors you could use and what tools you shouldn’t use.
What does WYSIWYG mean?
The somehow cryptic abbreviation WYSIWYG stands for “What You See Is What You Get”. In such editors you edit not directly the source code of your documents, but its presentation as it (hopefully) will appear in the final document. So instead of writing blocks of code manually (as you e.g. would do it in Word or Latex), you manipulate with design components using an editor window. This means that you view something very similar to the end result while the document or image is being created.
Notice: this post reviews only desktop-based WYSIWYG-editors which run on Windows, Linux or Mac. It doesn’t provide an overview of JavaScript-based WYSIWIG-editors — you can find an extensive overview of JavaScript-based WYISWYG Web Editors in the post Through The Web WYSIWIG Web Editors — The List or WYSIWIG Editors Test.
Adobe Dreamweaver
Dreamweaver (Win / Mac)Previously Macromedia Dreamweaver, this tool is one of the commonly used editors which can support developers, improve the workflow and save you a lot of time during coding. While previous versions of Dreamweaver sometimes produced rather quirky source code, the last version is able to generate (mostly) quite clean markup.
Dreamweaver also offers numerous helpful tools such as the library of code snippets, ftp management, server debug and an integrated coding development. E.g. you can view CSS information in a single, unified CSS panel that makes it easy to see the styles applied to a specific element, identify where attributes are defined, and edit existing styles without entering Code view. See also our List of Dreamweaver Tutorials. Price: $400 (version CS3).

Some of Dreamweaver’s endless features:

Advanced CSS Editing
Integrated coding environment
Spry framework for Ajax
Browser Compatibility Check
Integration with Photoshop CS3 and Fireworks
Code snippets (e.g. CSS Layouts)
FTP management
XML support
FLV support
Learning resources (e.g. Adobe CSS Advisor)
Numerous Dreamweaver add-ons, e.g. SVN for Dreamweaver ($59).

Amaya
Amaya (Win / Mac / Linux)What really makes Amaya different is the fact that it is a hybrid of a web browser and a web-page editing application — thus you can browse in the Web and edit your pages in the same application. Created by the WWW-concorcium, this allround-tool allows you to manipulate web-sites, change or update their content, insert new images or links. Of course, if Amaya can display these pages.

The last version of the editor, Amaya 10, was released in February 2008. It is able to work on several documents at a time (several (X)HTML, native MathML (.mml) and SVG (.svg) documents can be displayed and edited at a time). E.g. you can insert mathematical formulas using a pop-up: Amaya converts them via Math-ML on the fly.
Amaya also includes a collaborative annotation application (annotations are external comments, notes, remarks that can be attached to any Web document or a selected part of the document) and it has support for SVG, RDF and XPointer. Open-source.
Rapidweaver
RapidWeaver (Mac)RapidWeaver is a powerful template-based website creation tool which can generate pages of different kinds, such as styled text, weblog, contact forms, image galleries, Flash slideshows, and podcasts; it also has a built-in FTP uploader, and integration with iPhoto and .Mac.

The editor includes podcasting, inline comments, RSS feeds, custom permalink and tag support. RapidWeaver has also been finely tuned to be SEO friendly. It also has many powerful features such as modifiable themes, live php rendering, mix and match WYSIWYG and HTML, smart publishing, XHTML and CSS based site output, viewable source code, built-in error checking. All templates are XHTML and CSS based. What is remarkable is that all the code RapidWeaver generates is valid. Price: $49.
Adobe Contribute
Adobe ContributeThe main purpose of Adobe Contribute is to allow editing web-sites and blogs for users without any technical expertise. Contribute CS3 enables content authors to update existing websites and blogs while maintaining site integrity. Contribute offers a Dreamweaver integration, enables posting from Microsoft Office and editing from IE 7 and Firefox.

With a WYSIWYG authoring environment, content authors and contributors can edit or update any website or blog without having to learn HTML. Price: $169 (version CS3).
Adobe Golive
Adobe Golive (Win / Mac)Once Adobe’s flagship, now GoLive is an editor which even Adobe isn’t really happy with. In April Adobe has stopped development and sales of GoLive 9, which makes GoLive a legacy web authoring application. Adobe recommends its GoLive users to switch to Dreamweaver which is why you probably shouldn’t recommend GoLive (actually a remarkably powerful editing tool, see features below) to your clients.

Some of Adobe GoLive 9 features

Designer styles
Visual CSS layout
Place command
Adobe InDesign® integration
Color management
Platform support
Site management tools
Publish Server
Smart Objects

Microsoft Expression Web
Microsoft Expression (Win)Once being severely criticized for its really bad web-editors (Frontpage), Microsoft’s recent editor, Expression, seems to have learnt a lot from its predecessors. Expression attempts to comfort web-users with features which are remarkably similar to Adobe Dreamweaver. However, in a direct comparison Dreamweaver offers more and produces a cleaner code. Nevertheless, Expression does produce decent standards-compliant code and knows how to deal with CSS and CSS-layouts.
The Studio edition with further software applications (graphic design tool, video encoding tool etc.) costs ca. $500. Single Expression package costs $350. You can get Expression by updating Frontpage and thus save some money. A 60 days trial version can be downloaded for free, however a registration is required.
Please notice: Expression isn’t a successor of Frontpage, rather a different development tool. Microsoft Expression, which bears striking similarity to Microsoft SharePoint Designer, is rather designer-oriented, aimed at general web development. Microsoft SharePoint Designer which reflects the emphasis on designing and customizing SharePoint-based sites, can be considered as Frontpage’s big brother.

Some of Microsoft Expression features:

ASP.NET 2.0 Integration
Advanced CSS rendering
XPath Expression Builder
Build and format views of industry-standard XML data
Tag Property Grid
Accessibility Checking
Real-time Standards Validation
Full Schema Support

NVU
NVU (Win / Mac / Linux)This editor should once become a real alternative to dominating products: an ultimate WYSYWIG-editor for Linux, Microsoft Windows and Mac which could rival FrontPage and Dreamweaver. And in some aspects Nvu indeed offers more features than one would expect from a completely free software.
Nvu (pronounced as N-view, for a "new view") offers integrated file management via FTP, powerful support for forms, tables and templates and it is indeed very easy to use. CaScadeS, the well-known CSS editor add-on, is integrated into Nvu and enables you to create and manage stylesheets easily and see your style settings applied ‘”live” to the document you’re editing.

Nvu is open source and released under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). Unfortunately, the development of NVU hasn’t been continued over the last years. An advanced, improved version of NVU is KompoZer.
Some of NVU’s features:

Site manager allows you to review the sites that you’re building
XML support
Built-in validator

Kompozer
KompoZer (Win / Mac / Linux)This tool is a branch of NVU which has been developed further after the development of NVU has slowed down. KompoZer is a complete web authoring system that combines web file management and WYSIWYG-editing.
KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it a feasible solution for users who want to create sites without obtaining technical knowledge. Compared to NVU, Kompozer produces a cleaner markup and has visible marks — visible carriage returns and block borders.

The last version was released in August 2008. Kompozer can be considered as a sound alternative for small projects and for users without technical knowledge. But it’s definitely too weak for professional web-development.
Namo WebEditor 2006
Namo WebEditor 2006 (Win)Namo WebEditor combines almost all tools which are necessary for creating web-sites in a simple and user-friendly interface. The interface elements are remarkably intuitive, simple and easy-to-use. You can switch between a design-editor, HTML and browser-preview. You can also use a number of wizards to automate your workflow. Namo is powerful, however its WYSIWYG-features are limited. The editor wasn’t updated since 2006 which is why the producing source code is sometimes extremely quirky. Namo Web Editor Pro comes with a Flash editing program as well as a graphics program. A test-version is available. Price: $99.95.

Some of Namo Webeditor features:

Code Helpers for speedy auto tag completion
Quick Tag Editor
Tag Selector
HTML/CSS Reference

Evrsoft First Page 2006
Evrsoft First Page 2006 (Win)Actually, this editor is highly underrated. It’s not that popular and it hasn’t been updated since 2006, but it has some quite useful features one wouldn’t find in advanced WYSIWYG-editors. E.g. Auto History feature remembers all the attributes and values commonly used and suggests the “right” value automatically.
Dual Preview Engine enables you to preview your web documents in multiple browsers within First Page 2006. You can preview your work in Internet Explorer, Mozilla or view your page in both browsers side-by-side (horizontal/vertical pane swap). And a real-time visual source rendering engine offers document editing and previewing without the typical code tampering usually seen in WYSIWYG editors.
A number of integrated tools produce decent standards-based code, quickly and easily. First Page is freeware. Similar freeware alternative (also not updated since 2005): Selida HTML Editor.

Some of First Page’s features:

CSS Class Support & Auto Detection
Syntax Highlighting
Tag Document Selection Tool
Tag Auto Completion
Tidy HTML Power Tools
Preview in IE as you type
Image Mapper
CSS Style Sheet Designer
Server Side Includes Support
Highly customizable Toolbars and Interface
FTP client
Advanced Find & Replace In Files

Microsoft SharePoint Designer
Microsoft SharePoint Designer 2007 (Win)
Microsofts Frontpage successor. SharePoint Designer is a standard WYSIWYG-editor. Apart from support for interactive ASP.NET pages it doesn’t offer something revolutionary. Free trial is available. There is an online-version which requires Internet Explorer and a large potion of patience.

Some of Sharepoint’s features:

support for interactive ASP.NET pages
create Data Views from RSS, XMl, Office XML
collaborate with the built-in Workflow Designer
CSS tools
track customized pages
spelling checker
SharePoint Server 2007 integration

NetObjects Fusion
NetObjects FusionThis editor was once probably the worst yet extremely popular WYSIWYG-editor. It produced horrible source code (only MS Word produced worse source code), but was often given away by web-hosting companies and ISPs. NetObjects Fusion allows you to create web-sites without any technical knowledge. Particulalry if you’d like to create a business card, you may get it done in minutes. But if you want to create professional web-sites, NetObjects isn’t an option worth considering.
Currently NetObjects Fusion is available in its 10th version. The quality of the produced source code might have changed, but it doesn’t really matter. There is a trial-version which requires you to register in a shop. Which is why we have no screenshot for the product. Price: €100.
Quanta Plus
Quanta Plus (Linux)Quanta Plus is a stable, very comfortable and feature rich web development environment. Quanta has created an editor designed for efficient and natural use and with maximal user extensibility.
The editor is capable of both WYSIWYG and handcoding interface. It features tag completion as you type and tag editing through a dialog interface, script language variable auto-completion, project management, live preview and a PHP debugger. It also has a visual CSS editor, autocompletion for CSS, offers high extensibility and integrated preview.

The editor has also nice features for project management, including support for local and remote (through the network) projects. Project files can be uploaded to many servers using various protocols. CVS support is integrated, Subversion support is possible through external plugins. Quanta is based on KDE. Released under GPL.
Freeway
Freeway (Mac)Freeway (originally Uniqorn) comes in two flavours, Freeway Pro and Freeway Express. Freeway 5 Pro can be used to create CSS page layouts using absolute positioning. Advanced procedures (like connecting to a MySQL database using a scripting language like PHP) are done through plug-ins called “Actions”. Several Actions can be downloaded for free on several websites, but there are also commercial 3rd Party Actions.
There is a trial-version which requires you to fill in a quite long web form. Freeway has been nominated for the Macworld 2008 Awards in the Creative Web Product of the year section. If you use Mac, FreeWay is together with RapidWeaver probably first option worth considering.

Some of Freeway’s features:

Multiple Master Pages
Layout Tools
Link Map
Link Styles
Integrated .Mac upload
Internet Explorer Compatibility
Support for Sliced Background Images
Built-in preview within Freeway (Safari/Webkit)
Full EPS (Panther & later), Illustrator, Photoshop layered file import
Freeway Shop
Work with Blogger Templates

Seamonkey Composer
SeaMonkey Composer (Win / Mac / Linux)
This editor is a simple yet powerful alternative for large commercial applications. Being a successor of Netscape Composer, SeaMonkey Composer doesn’t really have anything common with it.

The editor is powerful yet simple and offers dynamic image and table resizing, quick insert and delete of table cells, improved CSS support, and support for positioned layers. The WYSIWYG-editor is built into SeaMonkey, an all-in-one web application suite.
Create
Create (Mac)Create combines the major features of applications like Illustrator, InDesign, Pages, GoLive, Canvas, DreamWeaver, QuarkExpress, Streamline in one easy-to-use, low-cost, OS X native application. Among other things you can add links to text and graphics with drag-n-drop, the tool automatically creates navigation bars and index and you can produce PDF and web-sites from one document.
WYSIWYG Web Builder
WYSIWYG Web BuilderWeb Builder is a highly customizable and extensible application with numerous features, scripts and templates. New design elements are added via drag’n'drop, many scripts. Image editing is available within the software.

The PayPal eCommerce Tools are integrated; RSS Feed object with podcast option, blog with built-in RSS feed option and Google compatible sitemap generator are available. The editor also has numerous extensions such as password protection, RSS feed, RSS parser, photo album and lightboxes.
Editors for non-professionals, newbies and small companies
iWeb (Mac)iWeb is small, compact and simple. You can switch the theme of any page with the click of your mouse. Mix themes in a site if you wish. You can place Google Maps and Google AdSense ads on your web pages and simplify navigation by dragging your photo albums to a sleek, animated index page. Web widgets, live content from other sites, like video, stock tickers, and headline news can also be added with few clicks. Price: $7. No trial-version is available.

Sandvox (Mac)
Sandvox features drag-and-drop website assembly, live editing without a preview mode, over 40 designs, and 17 different pagelets. It’s an easy and elegant website creation tool for people who don’t want to spend too much time developing their websites.
Drag and drop content, watch your site take shape as you create it, and make it available to others with Sandvox’s publishing assistant. Pricing starts at 49,- USD.

Sitegrinder (Win / Mac)SiteGrinder is a Photoshop Plug-in that converts Photoshop designs to web sites. It is smart. It has many many features. It is easy to use. Trial-version is available. Pricing starts at $129.

Studioline Web3 (Win)
The results of Studioline can be observed only if Javascript is activated — otherwise you won’t see anything at all. The source code doesn’t contain tables, but it has a very low quality and is extremely bloated. Don’t try this at home.
Bluevoda (Advertising)
BlueVoda is offered as a free download but requires a VodaHost account to publish the website to. BlueVoda looks very similar to Microsoft Office’s interface, like most WYSIWYG editors HTML code is hidden allowing the user to create websites without knowing code and having components such as tables, text formatting and the rest.
Website X5 (Win)WebSite X5 is a completely visual software: web-sites aren’t coded but “clicked” together. Remarkable: the results are standards-conform. Price: $60+.

(Win / Linux / Mac)Actually, is an advanced XML editor, but it also offers a number of useful tools for both newbies and professional web-developers. In fact, you can exploit the tool for editing (X)HTML-web-documents. E.g. it makes easier the document sharing between content authors by including a Subversion (SVN) client. The SVN client allows you to browse repositories, check for changes, commit changes, update your working copy and examine the revision history. The editor is available as standalone desktop or Java Web Start application, or as an Eclipse plugin. Price: $59.
No code and text-editors? Wait, there will be more. Designing blogs in a unique way is hard. Whatever blog engine you are using, there are literally thousands of templates available which you can apply directly, without any significant code modifications. That’s efficient, but it’s not creative, because using a default blog-template you risk to end up with some wide-spread look which has actually nothing to do with you. To convey your personality effectively, you need a design which reflects who you are and what you are doing. That’s why important is not just what you post, but also how you post it.
In fact, beyond the template-design-culture exists a field of creative, individual and impressive blog designs. And the good thing about it is that this field has been rapidly growing over the last years. To celebrate the creativity of blog designers we regularly present reviews of excellent blog designs we have stumbled upon recently. This post is no exception. Below you’ll find 50 further examples of excellent, unique and impressive blog designs.
Apart from “usual” minimal designs, one can observe more rather complex graphic works. If earlier only blog headers had striking visual elements, now whole web-layouts seem to have become more vibrant: paper clips, mp3-players, coffee cups and further objects are used extensively. Apparently, they are used as metaphors for the environment of site designers. Such designs are just impossible to copy and they unite the visual design with the author’s content in a unique and very personal layout.
You can also have a look at our previous showcases:

45 More Excellent Blog Designs (February 2008)
30 More Excellent Blog Designs (November 2007)
45 Excellent Blog Designs (August 2007)

Excellent Blog Designs
NarfstuffPerfect integration of visual elements in a standard 2-column blog structure. You don't recognize the number, but you pick it up anyway because who knows? It might be important. "Hello?" you say. "Hello?" No answer. Just as you're about to hang up, you hear a click and then a friendly voice finally comes on, asking if you'd like to apply for a credit card, change power companies, or purchase a burial plot. There goes two minutes of your day that you'll never be able to get back. And odds are it's going to happen again tomorrow, the day after, and the day after that.
We're not entirely sure that CallerComplaints will get those nasty telemarketers off your case any more than asking them to remove your number from their list. But it certainly might make you feel better.
When you visit the web site, you can type in the phone number of the people who have been calling and hanging up on you to find out if other people have complained about calls from that number. You can read their comments and enter your own. Or if you're just bored and want to read some horror stories, you can click on the most reported numbers from the past week, month, or all time. While Google may not be ready to release its Android mobile operating system on the world yet, the company did demonstrate the latest version of its upcoming cellphone OS today.
Overall, Android has an iPhone-like look and feel. The home screen has a program launcher that looks remarkably similar to Apple's. But there are a few things that set it apart. First, the status bar that shows up at the top of every page is far more interactive. You can click and drag any item on the status bar from any program to pull down a menu that will show you missed calls, unread emails, or other information.
You can also easily customize the shortcuts on your home screen as well as the look and location of widgets like a clock. And while you can zoom in and out of web pages using the mobile browser much the same way you can with Safari for the iPhone or Opera Mini for pretty much every other phone, you can also double click on the screen to open a magnifying glass-type box that lets you zoom in on just portions of a web page.
In addition to the video above, the folks at Android Community shot a few videos demonstrating Google Maps, Street View, and Pac-Man running on a prototype Android device.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

However, how can you achieve a clear and intuitive design solution? Well, there are a number of options — for instance, you can use grids, you can prefer the simplest solutions or you can focus on usability. However, in each of these cases you need to make sure your visitors have some natural sense of order, harmony, balance and comfort. Of course, there are many possibilities. Hopefully, this post will help you to find your way to more effective and beautiful web designs or at least provide some good starting points you can build upon or develop further.
