• Papal States
  1870

  Italian forces took over the Papal States and Rome came under Italian control. It became the capital of the united kingdom of Italy.

• Venetia
  1866

  The Austrian province of Venetia, which included Venice, became part of Italy.

• Giusseppe Garibaldi
  May 1860

  Garibaldi led an army of Italian nationalists, the Red Shirts in Southern Italy. He captured Sicily and other southern areas. They united with the kindgom of Piedmont-Sardinia.

• War with Austria
  1858

  Cavour provokes a war against Austria to drive them out of northern Italy. He gets help from French emperor Napoleon III to defeat the Austrians and take all of northern Italy, except for Venetia.

• Camillo di Cavour
  1852

  Sardinia's king, Victor Emmanuel II, named Count Camillo di Cavour as his prime minister.

• Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia
  1848

  Adopts a liberal constitution.
