1551 Santiago del Estero, in the foothills of the Andes, is founded by colonists from Peru. It is the oldest permanent Spanish settlement in Argentina.
1536 Pedro de Mendoza founds the settlement of Nuestra Senora de Santa Maria del Buen Ayre (Buenos Aires). It is wiped out by disease and attacks from local indigenous tribes.
