“In this new season, we will depart from traditional styles and introduce to our audience artists that are on the leading edge of contemporary music. We are thrilled to present the genre-bending collaboration between John Doe and The Sadies. The fusion of traditional country songs with a modern sound stretches the boundaries of conventional music classifications.” - Dean Robert Bucker John Doe is a founding member of the seminal LA punk rock outfit X and the country spin-off band The Knitters. Doe’s solo career began with 1990’s Meet John Doe, and he has since garnered worldwide acclaim. Entertainment Weekly calls his work, “rip-roarin’ and warm-hearted,” Q deems it “the tightest, finest and most morally acute music of the last 20 years,” and The Boston Globe praises its “striking emotional territory...” The band, The Sadies has become as renowned for its collaborations as it is for its own releases. They’re the live band on Neko Case’s The Tigers Have Spoken and co-wrote songs with Case for her last album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and they’ve recorded albums with The Mekons’ Jon Langford (The Mayor of the Moon) cult soul legend Andre Williams (Red Dirt) and others. Entertainment Weekly said of the band, “Toronto's Sadies earn both halves of the "country rock" tag, tearing through honkytonk, rockabilly, surf, electric bluegrass, and heavy psychedelic rock with virtuosic soul and unhinged brawn.” Dallas Good - guitar, keyboards, vocals Travis Good – guitar, vocals, fiddle Mike Belitsky – drums Sean Dean – upright bass John Doe and The Sadies joined forces for Country Club, an album of classic country covers and originals, which was released in April 2009 on Yep Roc Records. “Country Club is the result of a drunken promise or threat I made to Travis & Dallas [Good, of The Sadies] the first night we played together in Toronto. These happen all the time but it's rare that anyone remembers them the morning after, let alone follows through and makes it a reality. I'm really glad we did,” chuckles solo artist John Doe about the series of events that led to his new project with cosmic roots rockers The Sadies. By including varying yet equally beloved movements within the country music pantheon, Doe and The Sadies were able to cover their heroes while filtering the pop sensibilities of 60s Nashville through the electric honky tonk of Bakersfield, CA. Doe remarks, “We're not sure why it sounds like it's from the sixties. Maybe that's our favorite era of country music or maybe that's what we listened to when we first learned how to play it. But what was called ‘Countrypolitan’ always seemed one of the coolest hybrids of country music. But we agreed quickly & completely that there were going to be no string sections, horns or choirs. Bakersfield vs. Nashville was never a dispute . . . Bakersfield!” Dallas Good of The Sadies continues, “The songs chosen were very ambitious, and while we haven't re-invented the wheel we have created a cohesiveness between several hit country & western singles and our own styles.” Despite the innovation of melding the sounds of Nashville and Bakersfield, timeless sounds abound. All of it driven by Doe’s singular vocals, the dueling thousand pound chops of the guitar-wielding Good brothers and The Sadies’ world class rhythm section of Mike Belitsky and Sean Dean.
“The November 1st performance of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra will usher in a new era in California State University, Northridge programming. The Valley Performing Arts Center provides us with a venue that can accommodate a 100-piece internationally recognized symphony orchestra for the first time.” - Dean Robert Bucker Celebrating its 65th Anniversary in 2008, the MOSCOW STATE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (MSSO) is acclaimed as one of the greatest orchestras from a cultural tradition rich with extraordinary symphonic ensembles. Founded in 1943 by Lev Steinberg, the MSSO quickly established a reputation as one of the premier interpreters of the Russian “classic” composers. Under the subsequent leadership of Nikolai Anosov and Leo Ginzburg, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra developed relationships with the most prominent Russian Twentieth Century musicians and composers, including many premieres of Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Myaskovsky, and Gliere. The Orchestra also had the distinction of performing under the directorship of the well-known Soviet female conductor, Veronika Dudarova. In addition to its regular appearances at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory and performances throughout Russia, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra has been enthusiastically received throughout the major musical centers of the world. The MSSO has engaged in extensive international touring, visiting over 50 countries under Kogan and performing 20-50 concerts abroad each year, including the most prestigious concert halls of Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Japan, Hong Kong, North Korea, South Korea, Australia, and the United States. Since Pavel Kogan assumed the positions of Music Director and Chief Conductor in 1989, the MSSO has steadily expanded its repertoire beyond the classics of Russian and Western symphonic literature to include contemporary compositions from both Russia and abroad. In 1970, at the age of 18, Pavel Kogan won First Prize and the Gold Medal at the Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki. This led to engagements in recital and as soloist with the world’s leading orchestras of Russia, Europe, Japan, and the United State, including the Philadelphia Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1974, at the age of 22, Kogan made his conducting debut with Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Philharmonic Orchestra, and subsequently focused more on conducting. He is now considered one of the top conductors in Russia, appearing frequently with the leading orchestras of Europe and the United States. In 1989, Pavel Kogan was named music director and chief conductor of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra (MSSO). Under his leadership, the MSSO has become one of the most respected ensembles in Russia.
