Indian Star of Tennis Becomes a Champion for Peace
Leading Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna was today named a “Champion for Peace”.He joins a group of 47 major international athletes committed to serving peace through sport in the world.
Created at the initiative of “Peace and Sport”, a neutral international organization under the High Patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, the “Champions for Peace” club includes elite athletes representing 27 different nationalities. They embody 26 Olympic and non-Olympic sports disciplines, boasting a total of 49 World Champions, 20 Olympic Champions and more than a hundred national and regional titles!
Each Champion for Peace, in his or her own way, takes action to ensure that the values of sport contribute to dialogue, rapprochement and reconciliation between communities that have been divided by armed conflict, extreme poverty or lack of social cohesion.
At 30 years old, Rohan Bopanna wanted to commit to this cause that is very dear to him.
Rohan Bopanna
Since he entered the professional tennis world in 2003, this native of Bangalore has become one of the ATP’s best doubles players. In this category, he was ranked 43rd in 2008 (a career high) after winning the Los Angeles Open.Rohan is currently ranked in 51st place, thanks to his superb victory in the final of the South African Open in Johannesburg in February 2010 and reaching the finals at the Nice Open in May 2O10.Rohan has represented India in the Davis Cup on nine occasions since 2002.He aims to represent his country at the upcoming Commonwealth Games and 2012 Olympics in London.
In addition to his talent and impressive performances, Rohan brings unprecedented experience and motivation to the Champions for Peace initiative. For over three years, Rohan has played doubles with Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi from Pakistan, who is also a Champion for Peace. Aisam and Rohan have enjoyed tremendous success playing together – winning one ATP trophy and numerous Challenger trophies as well as reaching the finals of four ATP World Tour events. Their story of friendship born out of tennis symbolizes the power of sport to bring people together, going beyond the historical conflicts between their countries, their cultural and religious differences and general prejudice.
Before the end of the year, Rohan and Aisam hope to organize a friendly tennis match at the Wagah border, the only checkpoint on the frontier between India and Pakistan. This event, supported by Peace and Sport, will incarnate the wish of Indian and Pakistani young people to live in peace.
“I am very proud to be named a ‘Champion for Peace’,” declared Rohan Bopanna.”Through tennis, I’ve become friends with people I had nothing in common with:not language, not culture, not religion.I am proud to say that I consider Aisam as a brother, even if our two countries have lived in tension for over 60 years.Together, we unite our forces to go further.I believe that our story will inspire other people to get to know each other by playing sport, despite their fears or their prejudices.”
Joel Bouzou, President and Founder of Peace and Sport, himself a World Champion and Olympic Medallist, added: “Through their message of brotherhood, dialogue and peace, Rohan and Aisam are helping to change mentalities and attitudes in India and Pakistan as well as in other areas of the world affected by conflict. We are pleased to support them in this great adventure, and to welcome Rohan into the Champions for Peace club.I know we can count on him to be a great ambassador for peace through sport.”
The Champions for Peace club includes such sporting legends as SERGEY BUBKA (Olympic Champion and six-times World Champion, Pole Vault, Ukraine); FRANKIE FREDERICKS (double World Champion, 100 and 200 metres, Namibia); CATHY FREEMAN (Olympic Champion and double World Champion, 400m, Australia); YELENA ISINBAYEVA (double Olympic Champion and double World Champion, Pole Vault, Russia), CHRISTIAN KARAMBEU (World Champion, Football, France) BRADLEY MCGEE ( Double Olympic Champion, World Champion, cycling, Australia), PAULA RADCLIFFE (World Champion, Marathon, U.K.) and many others.

The FIFA World Player of the Year says “I am amazed at how light the new F50 is; I can barely feel them on my feet. Speed on the pitch is a really important part of my game and wearing the world’s lightest boot will hopefully make me faster and enhance my performance during the most important games of the year!”
The need for speed in modern football has never been greater, where millimetres or a fraction of a second can make the difference between winning and losing. adidas has responded to this athlete request by reinventing the rules of speed and turning the iconic F50 boot into the lightest adidas boot ever made.
Andreas Gellner, Managing Director, adidas India comments “Players like Lionel Messi wanted boots that would enable them to be faster. Players want to be first to the ball, so we decided to give them just that; a lightweight product which could help the players play better. We hope that this new product will assist all football enthusiasts in getting to their goal.”
The F50 adiZero will be worn by players during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The chameleon purple, white and electricity boot will be worn exclusively by Lionel Messi with Steven Pienaar (South Africa), Jozy Altidore (U.S.A), Shunsake Nakamura (Japan), Salomon Kalou (Ivory Coast), Arjen Robben (Holland) and Lukas Podolski (Germany) wearing the sun, black and collegiate gold colourway and David Villa (Spain), Samir Nasri (France), Jermain Defoe(England) and Johan Vonlanthen (Switzerland) wearing the black and sun version.
The adiZero F50 is priced at Rs. 7,999 and will be available in select adidas stores across the country.

May 16, 2010, New Delhi: As a constant endeavor to promote sports at the grassroots level, adidas, the World’s No 1 football brand, hosted a three city selection event in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chandigarh to select six students, football enthusiasts who will be the official ‘adidas FIFA Fair Play Flag Bearer’ at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
As part of the initiative, students with a passion for football, between the age group of 12 – 16 years were invited to test their speed and sportsmanship from various schools and football academies across the three cities. The fervor of the event across the cities was electric with football enthusiasts testing their lightening speed football skills. The star of the event was former India International Carlton Chapman, who is also coaching a local football club – Royal Rangers
At the event, children present undertook the ‘adidas Light Speed Test’ which was a test divided into four stages in order to assess the speed and sportsmanship of the participants. The ‘adidas LIGHT Speed Test’ consisted of tasks like sprinting over the ladder, dribbling around the cones, dribble around the obstacle and finally shooting the ball in the goal. The participants clocking the fastest time across the three cities were shortlisted and chosen as the final winners.
The six lucky winners will fly to South Africa and will carry the FIFA Fair Play flag on to the centre of the football field during the match between Portugal and North Korea at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South that will be played on the 21st of June.
Commenting on this unique initiative Andreas Gellner, Managing Director, adidas India said, “Football’s popularity in India has been on an upswing for the last 5-6 years and the passion for the game is intense! Fuelled by the teams and football stars of the Barclays Premier League, football has caught India’s sporting imagination and as the No 1 football brand in the World, adidas is in a unique position to provide access to once-in-a-lifetime experiences like being a FIFA Flag bearer at the FIFA World Cup. We believe such opportunities – to see world class events and interact with international athletes – will encourage greater participation and involvement in football & sports in general”.
Supported by Hindustan Times as the associate sponsor; the contest was open for students and football enthusiasts across the country. Registration was done via www.hindustantimes.com/adidas and on-ground registrations.
