Wilson believed that over time the League could correct it's own problems. As the senate prepared to vote on the treaty, Wilson lay close to his death, barely able to speak. The treaty revised to eliminate the complaints of the reservationists reached the Senate for a vote, a year after the war ended.
Germany surrendered to the Allies in a railway car in Compiegne, France. The leaders had no choice but to surrender. The war was over.
Thousands of Americans fighting in the Meuse-Argonne region of the northeast France. Trapped behind enemy lines, York and 16 other Americans took cover from blistering machine-gun fire. Anyone found obstructing army recruiters, aiding the enemy, or generally interfering with the war effort could be punished with up to a $10,000 fine and 20 years of imprisonment.
9.6 million registered for the draft and were assigned a number. The government held a "great national lottery” in July to decide the order in which the first draftees would be called into service.Over the course of the war, more than 24 million Americans registered for the draft.
To build the army, President Wilson encouraged Americans to volunteer for service and pushed congress to pass this act. Authorized a draft of young men for military service in Europe. The first day of it’s enactment was June 5,1917.
The Zimmermann note proposed an alliance with Mexico, stating that if United States declared war on Germany, Mexico should declare war on the United States. Most of the leaders knew that Mexico had no intention of attacking the United States. Congress responded on April 6, 1917 to the note.
Germans sank the British passenger liner Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. Americans protested that the unarmed and unresisting ship should not have been sink without first being warned. German said they weren’t going to sink anymore of the ships, but in 1916, Germany violated that promise by sinking the unarmed French passenger ship Sussex.
In early August Russia mobilized for war to help its ally Serbia against Austria. Germany than declared war against Russia.German soldiers fought through Belgium and moved.
