Abraham Lincoln was elected president. The southern states were scared that he was going to end slavery. so they broke away from the U.S.
Civil War started.
Dred Scott decision and Minnasota and Oregon added. And Lincoln-Douglas debate.
A slave wanted freedom from his owner. And the Missouri Compromise was repealed. And James Buchanan supported the decision.
Mexican leader Santa Anna sold the land Gadsden purchase to the U.S. for 10 million.
Gadsden Puchase and Kansas Nebraska act took place.
Appealed to both free and slave states. California was a free state and slave trade banned in D.C. But New Mexico and Utah could decide to have slaves or not and people who were protecting runawy slaves had to return them
Fugitive slave law was placed. And California was added.

Gold is found in California. It was Americas first gold rush. Mny people came from different place to find gold.
Polk sent general Zach Taylor to the part of Texas near he Rio Grande River where they were attacked. On may 1846 congress declared war on Mexico. Americans took over California, and captured Sanfransisco and Monterey. In 1847 Mexico City was captured. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the war and Americans got 2/5 of Mexican territory.
Iowa, Texas, Florida, and Wisconson became states. Mexican war and Oregon treaty took place.
Was created by an American missionary who took 1,000 in a wagon train from Indepedence Missouri to the Oregon country, the trail becam known as the Oregon trail. It is 2,000 miles and took 6 mnths to cross.
