The PROJECT A YEAR AT THE WHEEL timeline, a place to collect and share things from our election year trip.

A YEAR AT THE WHEEL has no followers yet. Be the first one to follow.
It seems like 90% of the folks we stay with bring up travel journals that remind them of our trip. John Steinbeck's 'Travels with Charlie' is among the more popular ones.
Never having read any of the road journals mentioned to us by our gracious hosts, and declining the offer to read, and/or hear, about said travel journals... You see, we really don't want to be influenced or deterred when completing our book of travel stories.
Funny thing is... we can't seem to get away from them... in Austin,Tx. we ran into the original Kerouac manuscript, and when staying near Monterey California's cannery row things were no different... Steinbeck this, Steinbeck that.
Then we remembered the libraries in his hometown of Salinas, Ca. were threatened with closure a while back... in general another thing we try and stay away from is stories that have been told... good thing for us this one is still unfolding.
Find out more here: And if you care, keep an eye on this.. it looks like the political vultures might pick the library's funds clean once again.
Libraries are most important in areas of the working and undereducated... let those go and you will feel it in EVERY zipcode, not just the ones you use and abuse. Distributed by Tubemogul.

Recently I saw a show on the Weather Channel (yeah, I know who "watches" the Weather Channel) about the Great Chicago Fire. Being a born and bred Chicagoan I was all ears as city history is one of my favorite topics.
I was shocked to hear that after the fire - just a week later, folks had built some 6000 temporary housing structures. Further online investigation proved that yes, thousands of temporary homes were built and even large barracks to house the very poor, not only that but also food, immunizations, and other medical care were immediately put in place. This was done with funds from the city, donations from around the country, local business owners, and insurance companies pitching in.
This was 1871, there were no phones, no automobiles, no semi-trucks, no FEMA. So how is it that a city with 90,000 people suddenly homeless, with over 17,000 buildings destroyed could be calm, rational and get the job done - with none of the modern advances that we all hold so dear? Meanwhile when Katrina hit modern New Orleans in 2005, and a vastly larger amount of money was raised through donations, and the government pledged tons of cash, and we have so much more than we did in 1871 -- better transportation, bigger machinery, yet the city remains largely unrebuilt.
How can that be? Even with all of the Homeland Security, FEMA, Salvation Army, the National Guard, and yet the city is still undone, there are large villages of homeless people sleeping on the streets because they lost their home in the storm. FEMA trailers have been repossessed be the government, even though many of their residents were still living in them.
Drive a little West of New Orleans, and see where Rita hit a year later, tarp roofs are still on many homes, and now what has just happened to Galveston and the Texas Coast, how long will those people have to wait for real help?
Has our government become so big it is just flopping over itself? Have we as the human race become so apathetic we think sending $5 in the mail to the Red Cross vindicates us and really makes a difference? Have we allowed big business and insurance companies to gain so much power over us that we feebly stand by as our brothers and sisters are cheated and stolen from?
If our nation is broke, and broken, as it appears to be, then that may be the best thing to happen to us. Perhaps it will give us a chance to regain our humanity, and remember that we are all linked. It may give us a chance to rebuild a better nation one that our Forefathers planned for us, where all people are equal, and the government is to serve and protect the people, not oppress them, not spy on them, not take their money in taxes and offer nothing in return.

In response to all of the email we've received over my (shane) article, Bring me the head of Naomi Wolf, I've decide to post an example of what I see as a worth while study/read of revolutionary thought and action.
I've posted it as a FREE download.
WEATHERMAN By Harold Jacobs
You want to read about revolution... and I mean really get into the minds of a group of Revolutionary dreamers, thinkers and, most importantly, doers. Give this book a look. Download at will, tell your friends and, if you have to, pretend Naomi Wolf wrote it and spread it like a readable viral video.

If you ned it, here's a review of the above book.

This American couple is taking to the rails to find out how other people feel about this election year... Find out more below.
The STRAIGHT TALK TO HELL EXPRESS is roaring across the rails of the late, great USofA to see how Americans feel about the upcoming election and politics in general. The Straight talk to HELL express will be filming what, "We The People" have to say to our next President. We will deliver those words and opinions, straight to the steps of the White House, all the while covering election day live from Washington DC.
The STRAIGHT TALK TO HELL EXPRESS is the finale of a year long election year journey that filmmakers Shane and Amy Bugbee set out upon twelve months ago with their dog, turtle and nothing but $180 in their pocket. They have filmed across America, working odd jobs to get them from state to state.
Now the couple will step out from behind the wheel and get on a train to the Capitol, not just any train ride, this will be the "Straight Talk To Hell Express", and they want to hear from you before they get to the hell of bureaucracy and white washing --Washington DC.
Look for multiple daily updates on the website for the whole week leading up to the Election.
Our Train starts Oct 25th and will run until Nov 10th
if you want to stop out and say hey, we will post the route in the next couple of days.
with no sponsors, funding or corporate backing, this is truly an independently produced labor of love - if you dig what we're doing... please help spread the word.
Give me Liberty or give me... A YEAR AT THE WHEEL!

Lois Eisenhouer RIP
Shane and I visited his grandmother Lois early on in our trip.
He had not been to her home in more than twenty years, and though I've met her at a number of family events over the years, this was the first time I ever spent any real time with her one on one, or went to see her in DuQuion IL. I found Grandma Eisenhower to be a very worldly and independant woman. She worked for a big airline for many years and traveled to Hawaii 19 times in her life. She was happily married for many years, her husband passed long before my time in Shane's family, but there were a number of gentlemen she dated since being widowed.
We made these cookies together a few days before Christmas 2007, we stayed up half the night baking. It was a really great time!
Grandma Lois loved westerns, chocolate covered cherries, and these almond crescent cookies.
She was lucky to live her days out in her own home thanks to her youngest son Donald who lived with her as a caregiver for many years.
At over 80 years old she was a spitfire of a granny. I am glad for the time I had with her, we hoped to spend more time with her after our trip.
Grandma Lois' Almond Crescent Cookies
2 Sticks Butter (1 cup)
5 Tablesoons Sugar
2 Teaspoons Vanilla
2 Teaspoons Water
2 Cups Flour
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/2 Cup Chopped Nuts
Cream butter, sugar and vanilla.
Add water, mix well.
Add nuts.
Sift in flour, salt.
Mix until blended. Roll into balls, roll ball and bend into crescent shape.
Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes.
Cool and roll in powdered sugar.

A good friend of ours, Jeff Becerra is sick.
While filming for the documentary, we made a friend in, and forged an acoustic Death Metal band with Jeff Becerra singer for the seminal Metal band Possessed. We have posted some behind the scenes footage as well as an interview and more info on Jeff and his illness at the bands website:
http://www.myspace.com/repossessed2112
As a very important member of the underground, and one of the founders of Death Metal, Jeff Becerra deserves our support and encouragement. Please post your suport at the bands myspace place.
There is something to be said for the power of the mind, and the will and shit like that. Light a candle, subscribe to the blogs, pray to God, Satan, Allah, but please keep Jeff in your thoughts.
You can also read more about Jeff and his illness here:

Captain Grant Mitchell is an odd fellow to say the least. We could start with the Captain title and it's origins or the fact that we were told a young student that worked for him was, in another life, his soul mate... but, for now, we'll just stick to the fact that Amy worked some 90 hrs in 10 days and was robbed of overtime or the fact that I was paid for 20 hrs of work, even though I put in 40 hrs.
An odd fellow indeed - he reminds me of the type of guy who dresses as a clown for kids parties.
Regardless, after loosing his own ranch, belittling and blaming his ultra young wife for it and living in his truck because of it, he now shovels shit for an awesome and worth the price ranch.
If you do stay, please ask how this "draft dogging" patriot got the Captain Grant name and keep an eye on the kids... them there mountains are FULL of predators.

The great thing about ants is you can cover their little ant holes and they rebuild them every time, humans are big ants. We go do our seemingly pointless work and when we get our homes buried from a storm or our cars smashed in an accident we rebuild or replace, we don't just stop existing - unless of course we are dead.
I ask then, why on earth would we allow our elected officials to throw so much good money after bad? If banks and insurers are faltering they obviously had a lousy business model from the start, so why give them more money to piss away? If they are gone new banks and insurers will surface, maybe some who have learned from the pitfalls of the previous banks, and this will not happen again.
I am fed up, and I tell you, if our elected officials do go ahead and give these rich fat cats more money to squander I am going to take to the streets and march on down to Washington DC..... Oh wait, I ALREADY AM DOING THAT!
Geezo, Shane and I have been doing just that, our economy has been crashing for about 8 years now, were we the only ones who could see it?? We sold our house and got while the getting was good, and then as things continued to get worse, we had enough and took to the streets to tell it like it REALLY is, and we have been doing just that for nearly a year now. See our website: http://www.ayearatthewheel.com
Hasn't anyone been listening? Why isn't there ten thousand or a hundred thousand more of you joining us???

Let's hear it for YouTube!!
Why you ask...
Well, they're the first huge media outlet to notice little ol' us... and man did they notice.
A couple of days ago, they featured our video "I'm afraid of nothing... except the goverment." here: http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=rf&c=25&l=&b=0
And today the chose PROJECT A YEAR AT THE WHEEL to SPOTLIGHT here: http://www.youtube.com/browse?s=mp&c=25&l=
We ask that anyone paying attention, please go to the video above, give it a look if you haven't and please, rate and maybe even add a comment or three.
Why, what's in it for you, me or us?? Well, nothing but alot of "hits" for our videos... but YouTube did ask us to submit more videos direct to one of their editors, so that's cool - we think.
Regardless, we'd like to put on the best showing we can, so please stop out and show some love.

We join the Longest Walk in Taos, NM and talk with American Indian Movement's Dennis Banks... Dennis has a long history standing up and fighting for human rights, look him up if you're not in the know.
Haven't heard of The Longest Walk? Of course you haven't - most mainstream media ignored it and 'new media/bloggers' like the Huffington Post missed it. New Media/blogging has a LONG way to go. Most bloggers are carbon copies of who and what they see on T.V. and outlets like the Huffington Post continue the trend of only giving a voice to the over educated, out of touch, wanna be writers posing as a journalists.
Tip to the world of 'new media' - Wanna get the dirt? employ a plumber, drug dealer, stripper or someone who lives off of food stamps and you'll truly have your ear to the street. And to the blogging community - your podcamps and new media expos are lacking what would truly make blogging/podcasting something respectable - breaking the news that the white washed huffington posts of the world miss and reporting on folks of differing backgrounds and color.
Shame on ALL who missed reporting on The Longest Walk. http://www.longestwalk.org Distributed by Tubemogul.

We're less then 90 days from the end of our year long, election year coverage.
To be honest, we never thought we'd make it this far, but we have... and not without your help.
We're in the home stretch and are asking for one last push.
We need to raise $4,000 to finish the trip in Washington D.C. on Nov 4th...
The monies we're raising will go towards our massive transportation costs, food, shelter, and much needed equipment upgrades and maintenance.
We've been working from town to town, cleaning toilets, baking cookies... but at this point we need to make time and get to D.C..
In order to make it to Washington D.C. on election day, November 4th, WE NEED YOUR HELP.
If you can, we'd really appreciate it... this is a project we've been pouring our hearts and over a year of our lives into. We'll be glad to add your name to the thank youz in the book and hell, If you decide you might want the book and DVD set we'll even deduct your donation/loan from the final cost ($49.99 value).
Don't want the book and dvd... consider your donation a loan... that's right, a loan that we'd be willing to start paying back in May of 2009 (6 months after the end of our a year at the wheel).
We have NO MONEY ways to help as well... email us for suggestions.

For what do we cry, you ask? Shane and I are sitting stationary for a bit to catch up on some editing, work on The Book and documentary film, and prepare for the rest of our trip - We've got the conventions and the election itself coming up. The RV is great, we haven't figured out if there is heat, so on the chilly oceanside nights I am sleeping with Myrtle the Turtle, who it turns out is actually quite cuddly - once she stops try to crawl over my face.
I have been trying to eat a lot of pastries as not to lose my clothing sponsors,it seems I have slipped out of my Plus Size status, and I need to get back in for alight.com (http://www.alight.com) and igigi.com (http://www.igigi.com), who have generously furnished most of my wardrobe for the trip. I have had to buy some thrift store sweaters though, since it's more Spring temps here rather than Summer temps - Low 50s at night, and 60s and 70s in the day.
The crispness of the ocean air, the sound of the waves, and the sea mist is unreal for us - a couple of Midwesterners... Hurray for the ocean!
The flowers and the local architecture are fantastic here, here's a few pics....

As we travel the country, documenting the election year from all of the wrong zipcodes, we were really taken with New Orleans. Not only did we spend alot of time in NOLA, we filmed alot as well.
New Orleans isn't a city you can easily capture on film, and it really should be experienced first hand, the sounds, smells and tastes are to be lived, and not lived virtually!
We've presented a slice of our footage in the blog postings below, we have much, much more... all of which we'll use for our book and documentary. (pre-order by clicking HERE.)
You can see ALL of the NOLA vids, along with all of the vids from our 8 months on the road here: http://ayearatthewheel.blip.tv/
Since our New Orleans stay, everyone asks "How is is since Katrina" and all we can tell em it's back and better than ever... it's rich history alone should make it a priority for every single American to visit - but the food, music and art makes any visit pay off in spades.
I do hope you'll take some time and check out all of our New Orleans videos, please post up a comment or two, it's free, takes very little time and it really helps keep us moving forward towards election day in Washington D.C..
And hell, if you really dig what we're doing, think about donating a little to the gas fund - thank!

We are madly in love with New Orleans and while each and every city we've visited has had amazing parts, and we're not exactly finished with our trip - NOLA is a place we crave each and every day. This video is a bit of what we witnessed - we can't get close to duplicating the NOLA experience on film - it's something to be lived, to be taken in deep breaths and tasted and savored in slow sips and bits - an amazing city, where color, taboo and prejudice of any kind seems non existent. No Joke - this is how New Orleans is ALL the time EVERY day - music of all kinds existing side by side 24-7 - it's IMPOSSIBLE to portray on film and only after 2-3 weeks in NOLA you might get a small glimpse into their very complex and eclectic music scene - now load up the truck and head to New Orleans.
