james simpson (proffesor of midwifery at edinburgh university) he invited his mates round and started sniffing chemicals a minute or two later they were all under the table. he then started using it in womens labour.
in 1846 london ether was used by robert listen to anethertise a patient during a leg amputation, it was discovered by michael faraday but i had draw backs as it caused coughing and was flammable.
Blood loose:- panicines makes your hart pump faster so blood would gush out constricting the arteries. lack of hygiene:- there was saw dust on the floor to soak up blood anf fieces, the surgeons used the same blood stained apron for every operation. instuments had wooden handles which fested germs. bowls of water were used after the operations
in 1799 sir humphry davy discovered that laughing gas reduced the sensation of pain, it seemed capable of reducing pain and was used in surgical operations. 40 years later the dentist used it in operations.
