On August 6, 1945 President Harry Truman used the most powerful bomb against Japan, the atomic bomb. It was dropped in Hiroshima reducing the city to ashes and debris. As many as 130,000 were killed with many hurt. The United States dropped another bomb on August 9th. Five days later, Japan surrendered.

On June 14, 1944 the Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy. That day is known as the D-Day invasion. The Allies were successful and by August the army entered into Paris.

During the Summer of 1943 the Allies captured the Italian Island of Sicily . The Italian's forced Mussolini to resign and Italy's new leader threw away the old Fascist Party. Then Italy agreed to stop fighting the Allies.

In 1942 the Germans decided to attack the city of Stalingrad in the Soviet Union. The battle lasyed for six long months, but the Soviet Union held their ground, once again beating Germany. This was a major lost to the Germans and they never could truely recover from the loss.

In June of 1941 Hitler turned on Germany's ally and invaded the Soviet Union. Soon Winter came and the Germans did not have the enough supplies to last through the harsh cold. For the the first time that war, the German soldiers retreated.

On December 7th, 1941 the Japanese bombed the Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii. Ships were destroyed and more than 2,300 Ameican Soldiers died. The nest day, President Fanklin D. Roosevelt declared war against Japan. The United States was now a part of World War 2.

In 1941 Hitler orderd the destruction of the entire Jewish population in Europe. The Nazis built death camps where the froced the Jews to work until they were nothing but skin and bones. If they did not work they were shot or put in gas chambers. Thousands even died fom the horrendous conditions at the camp.

In 1940, when Hitler sent German planes to bomb Great Britain and the British fought back with their own airforce. This struggle was known as the Battle of Britain.

In 1940 germany conquered Denamrk, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. This was all won during the first month of the war.

In 1939 General Francisco Franco finally conquered Spain and made himself the dictator. The Fascists had won. As dictator General Franco ended free elections as well as most other rights.

In 1939 Germany invaded Poland. Two days later Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. Now World War 2 had officialy began.

In 1938 Germany invaded and took over Austria and Czechoslovakia. Soon Hitler declared Austria part of the Third Reich . Czechoslovakia was conquered a while later by Hitler as well.

In 1936 a Civil War broke out in Spain. There were two sides to this battle. On side was the Fascists led by General Francisco Franco supported by Italy and Germany. Then there were the Loyalists who were loyal to the elected governemnet supported by the Soviet Union, France, Great Britian and the US.

Italy invaded Ethiopia in East Africa. Many countries were against this and protested, but once again did not want to go to war.

Japanese forces take control of Manchuria in China. The League of Nations protested, but took no military actions to stop them.
