This was the first of the Final Fantasy games that I played, and I was hooked from the start. The size of the world was unlike anything I had ever seen before and the depth of the storyline was beyond what I could even imagine. This game had so much replay value because you could take so many different paths to get to the same final outcome. I still vividly remember the first time my friends and I beat the game... it was about 3AM and we were so pumped we turned around and started a whole new game. This year in gaming Mario Kart 64 was released, Turok the Dinasour Hunter was released for the N64, and the amazing Fallout for PC was released. Reference 1997 in video gaming. (n.d.) Madden '96 was this first Madden Football game that I played, and it is responsible for hundreds of hours of my life being consumed by this series. I have been a "Maddenite" ever since. This was the last year where the game allowed you to hit a player after the play was over, in most cases causing an injury. As a diehard football fan it is obvious why i loved, and still love playing this game so much. This year in gaming Duke Nukem 3D, successor to the simple side-scrolling originals, and a genre-redefining title for first person shooters. (PC), Tomb Raider is released for the PC, PlayStation, and the Sega Saturn. It spawns a series of sequels as well as a series of movies, and Midway Games, Inc. (subsidiary of WMS Industries, formerly known as Williams Electronics) acquires Atari Games Corp. from Warner Communications Inc. (AOL Time Warner in 2000) Reference 1996 in video gaming. (n.d.) Mario 64 was the first console game that allowed the user to move in any direction 360 degrees. The game had so much interesting and interactive models and artwork in the mario world. This game had so much to look at and play with it was easy to stay entertained for hours. This year in gaming Game Boy Pocket (GBP) handheld console (30% smaller version of the previous Game Boy handheld console), Command & Conquer: Red Alert, the second major title in the Command & Conquer franchise, and the most popular one yet. Pilotwing 64 was an amazing game with dozens of levels and different modes of gameplay. As a geography buff, getting to fly around a mini version of the US and see such landmarks as the Golden Gate Bridge, the St. Louis Arch, and the Statue of Liberty made this game as fun as I can ever remember a game being. This year in gaming: 3DO publicly launches Meridian 59, widely regarded as the first MMORPG, Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, the third and last installment to the popular Donkey Kong Country franchise is released, and Nintendo 64 64-bit home console. This game was as addictive as it was groundbreaking. It used actual actors as the characters, and at the time it seemed like you were watching the real thing. As a kid this game was so much fun because of the features like fatalities, and secret levels. Not to mention the fact that I no longer had to shovel quarters into a machine to play it. This year in gaming: Atari Corp. releases the Jaguar home console, calling it the first 64-bit video game system, Maxis releases SimCity 2000, sequel to the tremendously popular SimCity, and Sega releases the Virtua Fighter (by AM2) arcade game, which is later displayed at the Smithsonian Institution. This game was amazing its time. I enjoyed playing this game for so many reasons... the high speed game play, brilliant colors, and art work in the background made this game so much fun to play. This year in gaming: Sega Releases Virtual Racing in arcades as the first 3D polygon racing game, The first Mario Kart game was released for the SNES spawing a new genre of racing games, and Wario was introduced as a new character. Super Mario Bros 3, in my opinio is one of the greatest games ever. This game stretched the limits of the NES system and had new and exciting features added to an already amazing series. With the different abilities like the Hammer Suit of the Power Leaf to fly, this game kept me playing for a very long time. The amount of replay value on this game was far above and beyond any of the other Mario games before it, and the graphics were leagues ahead of other NES games. Even though it was a side scrolling game, it gave the user the feeling like they were doing much more than just moving from left to right. This year in gaming: Mortal Kombat is released by Midway, The Sega CD console was released in North America, and the contrvesial game Night Trap was released for the Mega-CD. I got my Game Boy with Tetris for my birthday. When I got it I was instantly hooked. Tetris can be played for endless hours because the user is in control of the game. It is a basic puzzle game, but the possibilities are endless. The longer you play the harder it gets. I thought this was my birthday present, but I soon found out that my Mom enjoyed it just as much as I did and I soon found myself having to compete for my Game Boy time. This year in gaming: Nintendo releases the SNES in North America as well as the character Yoshi, Capcom releases Street Fighter II, and Sega introduces the character Sonic as they release the game Sonic the Hedgehog. Number Munchers was a game I used to play at school in the 4th grade. I loved playing this game because I love numbers, and I loved the thought of playing games at school. My school had this game on an Apple II so the screen was different shades of green... not the most amazing game in the world but it is one of my all-time favorites. For being an educational video game, this game still today has a huge underground following. This year in gaming: Capcom releases Mega Man 3, Nintendo releases Dr. Mario, and Sierra releases the great Kings Quest V. References: 1990 in video gaming. (n.d.) Super Mario Bros. I think is a must have on anyones list of Game History... given the person is old enough to have been around at that time. This is one of my favorite games of all-time because of its amazing gameplay and a soundtrack that is probably one of the most recognizable ever made. It was ahead of its time with dozens of levels and an original theme. This year in gaming, Nintendo turns 100 years old, John Madden Football was released as the first actual 11 on 11 football game, and the Gameboy was released. Reference: 1989 in video gaming. (n.d.)
