2. Senator Henry Clay of Kentucky proposed a Compromise that dealt with the select issues of slavery and states. Senator William Seward of New York spoke for the North and wanted to admit California as a free state right away. Senator John C. Calhoun of North Carolina represented the South and thought making California a free state would cause a disruption between the North and South. Vice President Milliard Fillmore signed the Compromise when President Taylor died.
3. There were already 11 free states and 11 slave states. People were arguing about California tipping the odds as the 12th free or slave state.
4. Senate passed Henry Clay's plan in September 1850 which stated that California was a free state, the Mexican Cession was divided into Utah and ____ , _something bout texas_ abolished the slave trade, and created new slave laws.

6. The South was beginning to feel more and more suppressed because of the abolished slave trade and the admittance of California as a free state.
