The Union tried to go and Capture the Capitol city which was Richmond. the Confederate soldiers were surrounding Fredericksburg. The killed the Union soldiers in huge quantities. This was the Unions worst defeat during the Civil War.
In the battle of Antietam, General Robert E. Lee who was the general of the south, lead his troops to maryland. This battle had three different locations: First in the corn fields early in the morning. By the end of that battle in the cornfields, every stalk of corn was glued to the floor. Joe Hooker was the general from the Union. Joe Hooker got shot in the corn fields. The second location was called "The Sunken Road". The Union came walking in the open battle field and the south was under this road shooting. The Union found another way to get around and on top of them and shot down on them. The last place was at the bridge. It took the Union a couple of days to cross this bridge, and they marched into town and started the third part of this battle. The south wanted this battle to stick out to Great Britain, so if they won, they would come and ally with the south and help defeat the north. Robert E. Lee mistakingly left his battle plan rapped in a cigar, and McClellan happened to find it. He reacted to slowly, so he did not get to use the information the way he could have. There was no official winner of this battle. The north could claimed it was their victory because Lees army were forced to withdraw and go back to Virginia.
The battle of Shiloh was in April, 1862. It took place in Tennessee. It was a two day battle. The Union gradually moved towards the Mississippi River. Grants was leading the Union army in this battle, and it showed Grants determination and dedication towards winning, which other Union generals lacked.
The south ran out of ammunition very fast, so they started to pick up rocks and throw them at the Union. This showed their dedication towards winning the war.
After South Carolina, theses were the next four states to secede

This is when Lincoln got sworn into Presidency. From the time when he got elected to the time when he got inaugurated, was when the U.S. fell apart

Abraham Lincoln ran for president representing the Republicans, For the southern Democrats was john C. Breckinridge. For the northern Democrats was Stephan Douglas. For the Constitutional Union was John Bell. They created the Constitutional Union to heal the division between the north and the south. Lincoln did not get any votes from the south but he still ended up being president. This upset the south because they felt that they were outnumbered
They seceded because they did not like lincoln. They felt that their voice was taken away in the National government, and believed that Congress and Lincoln already had their own ideas and thoughts set on what they wanted to do, especially abolishing slavery.
Dred Scott was a slave who moved with his owner to a free state. After his owner dies, he made a law suit saying that he should be free because he lived in a free state. The Supreme Court said no, because slaves are considered property, and that slaves cannot use the courts. Also they said that congress cannot say no slavery in a state, only the state government.
many people were rushing into Kansas to try to make it either a slave state or a free state. Many people fought
Charles Sumner was against slavery and he made a speech called "Crime Against Kansas", and criticized two members of the senate. Preston Brooks, nephew of Andrew Butler, beat Charles Sumner with a cane. Many thought that Sumner got what he deserved and they send Brooks canes to show their support.
There job was to keep slavery out of the west, just like the Free Soilers
Stephen Douglas wanted to make these two territories become a state. popular Sovereignty was used to determine if their was going to be slavery or not. Many border Ruffians came to vote illegal
A young women named Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this book to show everyone the what slavery is really like. It was used for propaganda.
There was five parts to this Compromise: 1. California was admitted as a free state 2. Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850 3. Washington slave trade was band 4. the Mexican Cession was divided into two territories New Mexico, and Utah 5. Popular Sovereignty was used to determine if there was going to be slavery in those territories
Since California was admitted as a free state, they needed to do something to please the south. They passed the Fugitive Slave Act which states that if anyone finds a runaway they must return it to slavery. And that you can not aid the runaways, and if you do then you would have been fined and put in jail
This took place in Sutters Mill. Many people came from all over the world, because they found gold. The people mining for gold were call the "49ers". This increased the population and brought diversity. This made California able for statehood.
John Brown wanted to give the slaves weapons so they could rebel against the south. It failed because almost were all killed or captured

Britain and America have been sharing this land for 11 years now, but now they both wanted it for themselves. They used the 49th parallel.
David Wilmot proposes a bill saying that slavery is forbidden in the territory that the U.S. got from the Mexican War. This was passed through the House but not the Senate.
Texas gained their independence from Mexico but remanded independent for nine years. The U.S was not annexing Texas, they threatened to join Britain. America was hesitant because if they annexed Texas, than Mexico will get mad and start a war. So when America annexed Texas, Mexico got very angry.
Henry Clay wanted to keep the balance in the senate of how many slave states and free states there were. In this Compromise he said that Maine shall be admitted as a free state, and MIssouri shall be admitted as a slave state. He also drew a line at 36 30 latitude. North of that line, is not allowed slavery, but south of that line is allowed to have slavery. From then on Henry Clay was known as the great Compromiser.
America got this land from Spain for five million dollars. The runaway slaves would run to florida to be safe. the Native Americans were planning on allaying with the Slaves to attack the south for kicking them out of their homes. Andrew jackson sent troops down there to stop that from happening.
This was won from Britain. They used the 49th parallel which determined the line of latitude.
President Jefferson was the president and he purchased this land from France, Napoleon Bonaparte. The French were in another war, so they gave it to us for 15 million dollars. many people were mad at Jefferson because they believed that purchasing that land was unconstitutional because Jefferson was a strict constructionism. This removed all the foreign countries from living in America because the only land that the French owned in America was Louisiana purchase, which america has now.
Eli Whitney created a machine that would produce cotton much faster. Thought that it would decrease slavery, but really increased it
