The Broad Run Baptist Church meeting house was destroyed by Federalist Troops during the Civil War.
Virginia waited almost 4 months after South Carolina, the first state to break away from the Union, before it officially seceded as well. South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas all seceded before Virginia.
Southerners slave-holders took the mere election of Abraham Lincoln, in 1860, as an insult and began discussing secession immediately.
There is a lapse in the Broad Run Baptist Church records, both church minute books and association minutes, from 1859 through 1866.
William D. Thomas became Pastor of the Broad Run Baptist Church in 1858. During Thomas' leadership the church reported a "prosperous condition."
After Spilman resigned, the Broad Run Baptist Church congregation went one year without a pastor. Two church members (G.W. Harris, William Dandridge) took over weekly services, but the Church was not doing well.

Augustus, a slave man belonging to Thornton Utterback, was charged and excluded from the Church forreceiving stolen goods.
A.H. Spilman became John's successor in 1849. Spilman became known at the Broad Run Baptist Church for his enthusiasm to convert sinners as well as his end to weekend sermons (he would sing a new solo to end each week). He resigned from service in 1856.
This conflict began over the Texas-Mexico borders dispute and the United States’ desire to purchase the California and New Mexico Territories from Mexico; but Mexico refused to sell and insisted the Texas border was North of the Nueces River (Americans claimed the border was farther South). Fighting began in 1846 and ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 where Mexico acknowledged the southern Texas border at the Rio Grande, and the U.S. purchased the California and New Mexico Territories for $15 million (Mexican Cession). This increased slave-holding states territory and sparked sectional frustrations in Congress.
In 1845 the Southern Baptist Convention was established, officially splitting southern Baptists from the northern Baptists.
A complaint was made in Church by Sally, a slave woman belonging to Brother Horner, against Joe, a slave man also belonging to Brother Horner.
One of Broad Run Baptist Church's most beloved Pastors was John Ogilvie. John was appointed in 1841, replacing George, he was also a supporter of colonization; but unlike George, he was peaceful arbitrator. John spent his weekends preaching, and weekdays teaching; this soon took a toll on his physical health, and John died young in 1849, at age 56.

After the schism occurred in Broad Run Baptist Church those members who left formed a new Church, called the Upper Broad Run Baptist Church in 1838. This institution was founded out of mutual anti-missionary sentiments.
The schism of the Baptist Churches in 1837, occurred over the issue of colonization (sending African Americans, slaves and free, back to Africa to colonize and establish their own government; this was proposed at first on more of a widescale solution for slavery but it did not work out and the missionary African Americans usually returned within a few years), the majority was for the missions, and the minority anti-missionary. Eventually the anti-missionary believers left to create "New Baptist" communities.
A schism occurred in the Broad Run Baptist Church in June of 1837 over the Articles of Faith. Article number 13 which stated, no church member may enter into any “Benevolent Institution” without permission from the church, this caused the dispute. The benevolent institutions being mentioned were those that either supported abolitionism (or openly despised slavery) or colonization. This schism ended with the church striking at least 15 people specifically by name from the list of members.
Sister Aggy, a free colored woman, was granted life necessaries furnished by the Church.
Tylor George was found guilty of stealing and was excommunicated from the Church.
Johnson, a slave man belonging to John Gaskins, was excluded from the Church for stealing bread from his master.
The most baptisms that were performed at the Broad Run Baptist Church between 1810 and 1860 were in 1832; 19 new members were baptized. That was the largest gain in membership in for BRBC throughout the 50 years.
A slave rebellion which occurred in August 1831, led by Nat Turner, an African American preacher, in Southampton, Virginia (also known as the Southampton Insurrection). This incident which resulted in 55+ white Americans deaths led to white citizens’ paranoia about African Americans, en-slaved and free. The end result was a series of laws being passed in the South making slave education, literacy, preaching etc, illegal.
This was signed in to law by President Andrew Jackson in 1830 and forced thousands of Native Americans to migrate west of the Mississippi River. This led to more westward expansion of the American settlers.

This was another religious movement, which swept across the United States leading to religious revivals in the early decades of the 19th century. It was in part a religious reactionary movement countering the Enlightenment which set in after the Revolutionary War. The teachings in this movement moved away from rationalism toward Calvinism.
Robin, a colored Church member, was cited for his many attempts to "invalidate the testimony" offered against another colored member of the congregation. Robin strenuously apologized and the Church excused him of this misconduct.
Abba Matthews, a colored woman and wife to Robert Matthews, was also excluded from the church, a few months after Robert, for disorderly conduct and using improper language.
Sally Johns, a free colored woman, was cited for bad conduct. After further inquiries were made by other Church members, Sally was found guilty of even worse conduct then originally reported, she was excluded.
Lyzza, a slave woman belonging to Phillip Warder, was excluded for attempting to poison the family.
Lysher, a slave woman belonging to Carr Bailey, was formerly excluded but presented evidence of her repentance and was restored.
Robert Matthews, a colored man, was unanimously excluded for disorderly conduct.
Edmund, a slave man belonging to Brother Thomas, was appointed Secretary to the Church. It was decided that Edmund would be paid $4 a year for these services.
Cumberland George was appointed Pastor of the Broad Run Baptist Church after William Frostoe's retirement in 1826. George led the Broad Run congregation in to greatly supporting colonization. This support was the direct cause of Broad Run being dropped from the Kenocton Association in 1836. This led to the schism in Broad Run Baptist Church and the formation of the Upper Broad Run Baptist Church (1837, 1838). George was replaced in 1841, and died abruptly in the summer of 1863.
Moses, a slave belonging to John Brown, was accused of the attempted murder of a fellow slave as well as disorderly conduct. Moses gave no evidence of repentance and was excluded.
Sukey, a clored woman is received by the Church.
Anna, a slave formerly belonging to Mr. Samuel Steele, now deceased; was remembered by the congregation as "a worthy member of a long time."
A frenzy occurred in Congress in 1820 because Missouri was the first state from the Louisiana Purchase to apply for statehood, and it wanted admittance into the Union as a slave holding state; this would throw off the balance of slave-holding states to free states votes in the legislature. So Clay’s proposal was passed to admit Missouri as a slave-holding state and Maine as a free state and from 1820 on any state from the new Louisiana Territory North of 36 30’ slavery was prohibited. This proposal was passed in March, 1820 and kept sectional balance for over 30 years.

Robin, a colored man belonging to Mr. John White, was excluded form the Church for his wicked conduct with women as well as being guilty of dirorderly conduct.

This was a central event in slave life between the Revolutionary War and the Civil War; the forced migration of thousands of slaves to the western United States (brought on by the move westward by many plantation owners as well as the invention of the Cotton Gin which made the production of cotton more efficient and lucrative).
Thomas Jefferson’s acquisition of over 820,000 square miles of land from France for $15 million dollars, finalized in 1803. The repercussions of this new land were an influx of immigration into the United States and a massive migration westward for many Americans (manifest destiny).
In 1790, the Broad Run Baptist Church was moved from its original building at Barker's Branch in Broad Creek to New Baltimore.
