The effects of European control is shown greatly throughout the country. Some good some bad. For example the AFricans lost a sense of their roots, land, and culture. Also since they grouped different ethnic groups together, it caused problems and tension. But though they lost all this Europeans brought modern technology. They improved sanitation and provided hospitals and schools.
The Boers were basically Dutch farmers. The war was against the British and the Dutch. The Boers blamed the British for losing their political rights in their country and this caused fighting with guns and using commando raids and guerrilla tactics. To defend themselves the British would burn farms and imprison children and women in diseased concentration camps. British finally won the war. Later the British allowed the Boer Republics to have a self-governed government under their control.
The US gains these lands. This caused a debate about whether they wanted to imperialize.
Only nation that successfully resisted the Europeans. This was with the help of Menelik the II. He built up a supply of weapons from France and Russia while he confused the European countries. In 1889 Ethiopia signed a treaty with the Italians. He noticed that in the Ethiopian version he was giving a tiny bit of Ethiopia, but in the Italian it gave away the whole country. He declared war and won one of the most amazing battles at the Battle of Adown. They defeated the Italians and remained independent.
She was the princess of Hawaii. She wanted to change things by creating a new constitution that would give her more power. This constitution would also give more power to the people and not the wealthy plantation owners. The workers had to keep this from happening, so they plotted to over take her and they did. That is why Hawaii doesn't have a monarchy anymore.
The whole continent of Europe wanted Africa's resources. So to prevent war between themselves they created the Berlin Conference. They broke up the country of Africa between 14 countries without any permission from the African People. They only care about the resources and not the different ethnic groups they were wrongly grouping together.
The canal is a human made water way that connects the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Isma'il supported the canal being built. It was built with the help of the French, who soon realized that they couldn't afford it. So the British bought it and in 1882 the British occupied Egypt.
The British East India Company took control of the Mughal Empire with the help of Sepoys. But then a rumor spread that their rifles had pig and cow fat on the cartridges and since cow is sacred to Hindus and muslims dont eat pork this caused a outrage which lead to rebellion. They gained control of the country, but couldn't decide who should rule, the muslims or the hindus. In this confusion, the British gained control, bringing up to the time of the raj.
