Stem cells have the potential to produce all the various types of cells in the body. Over the last four years, scientists have made great advances in reprogramming adult cells back into a stem-like state, turning back the clock and restoring their lost potential. These “induced pluripotent stem cells” or iPSCs could be used to provide treatments for diseases, or even new body parts, which are tailored to an individual’s genome. As this timeline shows, research in this area has raced ahead in the last five years.
