SSD (solid state disks) are all the rage in storage: from netbooks to laptops to arrays to IP storage.
On paper, these disks look like the best way to solve all of the storage problems: power consumption, disk performance and disk reliability.
But the catch: these disks are much more expensive than standard disks, and have far lower capacities.
On an up note, these disks can be used as part of tiered storage — aka different classes of disk for different purposes. In a single system you might combine high performance disks for same day recordings: to record the data quickly, and make it easy and fast to review the day’s footage. Then offload the data to slower, cheaper disks for a longer term archive. And after a few months move the footage to storage facilities, and turn off the live system, to save energy and reduce storage requirements by using tape. (Learn about using tape for movable storage)
So today, we are investigating which surveillance applications are a good fit for SSD, and so are our partners like Milestone. Stay tuned for our results and recommendations.

Another quick binaural recording (best listened to on headphones). A mundane Friday morning. Birds twitter, nearby cars, aircraft fly overhead and the near sound of a Tesco delivery.Ah the suburbs.
Other binaural recordings

My first meagre return to some binaural audio recording (headphones required) for very many years (the last attempts were very much back in ye olde analogue days of yore). This is (honest) the sound of a running tap filling the bathroom sink (riveting stuff I know). Once I figure out how to provide decent wind noise protection I expect I’ll try a few recordings out and about.

A Bill Nelson Interview circa the Trial by Intimacy (book of splendour) period. There’s still a fair amount of interest in Nelson ranging from his Be Bop Deluxe days onwards and I believe the Nelsonica fan conventions continue to take place both here in the UK and in the US.
A compact AAC+ encoded version is available here.
(*AAC+ audio files require this Plugin(Win) or a compatible player such as Songbird (Win,Mac,Linux), VLC(Win,Mac,Linux)or Winamp(Win) however Quicktime and i-Tunes will play file at half the audio bandwidth and in mono only)

Breaking news here at the office, we just finished transferring the final Revival Records master tape this afternoon after three years of making our way through this archival mess. We thought we were done yesterday but, Ken stumbled upon a box tucked away in the corner of the closet that he recovered last year from the black media hole that is Rob's stairwell. The last batch actually yielded a fantastic alternate version of "Footstumpin" by The Organics which will be included on the CD.
Much more to come on the Revival tape vault in the coming weeks as we finish preparing the DVD which will allow you to listen to over 200 songs, demos, sermons, steel guitar tuning tutorials, rehearsals, and engineer banter from the basement of Felton Williams where he started capturing the sacred sounds of Ecorse, MI over 40 years ago.

A slice of Hull’s Indie band scene from 1983 and the ever so slightly anti-corporate Red Guitars. Rediscovering this little gem reminds me there are many tunes that fail to make the big time pop chart but still have their place in the history of rock. It certainly sounds very early 80’s doesn’t it but I still find it very powerful and expertly crafted.
A bandwidth friendly but equally high quality AAC+ encoded* version is available here.

Long time no tape archive material so I had a quick delve & remembered a cassette I was given long ago featuring rough demo versions of songs that would eventually become David Bowie's Scary Monsters album. So here's an early version of the song that I partly named this blog after, Up the hill backwards.
If you're familiar with the album version you'll notice the different lyrics here, particularly the section with to "Skylab is falling".

Whilst continuing to trawl through various old analogue tapes I found this live recording of Kissing the Pink from 1983.The Last Film was a bit of a one hit wonder from that year and this is part of a live concert from a very promising synth pop band of the time. I’ve done my best to curtail the excessive high frequency ‘tizz’ in the top end of the recording but as it’s a peculiarity of the tape formulation used at the time it is at least an authentic representation of analogue distortions albeit triggering a few digital sonic artefacts (you what?).

After waking up a few days ago with ‘where’s Captain Kirk’ pinging around my inner mental jukebox and being put in mind of a few other quirky vintage recording in a similar genre pulled from the depths of my memory it was a pleasure to run into one of my previous mentions whilst transferring some old analogue recordings. Edward Fox by Manchester group Smack was a gloriously off the wall item in which a supposed article and interview with the actor is read out almost verbatim and which reminds us of quite how intriguing Mr Fox’s thoughts were at that time.

Some years ago I digitally cleaned an old vinyl record that had seen better days. It was scratched and worn but I was able to get most of the worst clicks and pops out. After all that work on someone’s behalf I find that the recordings are now available via i-Tunes and there are mp3 versions out there with the accompanying storyboard comic included.
The original: Spiderman - from beyond the grave-a Rockomic was released in 1972 and is a quite well made audio drama featuring Marvel’s Spiderman with period original 70’s music tracks embedded along the way.
Here’s part of the semi-cleaned up vinyl version anyway which is a bit of cheesey fun on headphones.
A smaller 1.5Mb sized AAC+ audio encoded* version is available here.
* AAC+ files require Songbird, VLC or Orban plugin(Windows only) for optimum playback. Quicktime and i-Tunes will playback only at half bandwidth (low-fi audio only).

This section begins by referring to Bowie’s then very recent acting in the film Just a Gigolo as potentially ‘wooden’ (you’ve got to admire Nicky Horne’s ability to not overly ingratiate himself with the guest).
I’ve left one of Bowie’s personal music choices in, namely La Düsseldorf by the band of the same name which then consisted of original Kraftwerk drummer Klaus Dinger along with Thomas Dinger and Hans Lampe who were sometime collaborators with Neu!
Questions include Bowie’s thoughts on Disco and disposable music and a pertinent question concerning Bowie’s comments he made a a year or so earlier that seemed to align him with fascism and which Bowie attempts to put into context and clarify.
AAC+ Encoded Version:
For those bandwidth sensitive or dial-up listeners who may have problems with streaming a 23 Mb mp3 file then there is a high quality AAC+ encoded * version of the same interview sized at only 5 Mb in size available here.
Read and listen to other Bowie items
(*AAC+ audio files require this Plugin(Win) or a compatible player such as Songbird (Win,Mac,Linux), VLC(Win,Mac,Linux)or Winamp(Win) however Quicktime and i-Tunes will play file at half the audio bandwidth and in mono only)

This is part one of an interview between Nicky Horne and David Bowie from February 13th 1979. Listening to the London phone callers still amuses me. The sound of the old telephone exchanges clicking away with crossed lines together with the surprisingly high quality of the caller subject matter (One caller floors Bowie by asking his opinion of Stanislavsky) though another chides him with a swift 'Shut up' after Bowie is playfully cheeky to her.
Anyway sorting some of these rarities out has taken a lot longer than I had anticipated and I'll be breaking many of these longer recordings down into sensible chunks such as this first 20 minute section.

This is the 2nd Prefab Sprout Interview I have from 1985 which takes place after the previously posted session . Paddy McAloon seems quite enthused by Thomas Dolby's production of the Steve McQueen album and is already dismissive of how well previous album Swoon would stand up in 1985's move towards a more heavily produced sound.

This Interview with two thirds of the ZTT record label from 1985 is an interesting look back at the label that fostered Frankie goes to Hollywood , The Art Of Noise and Propaganda onto the mid 1980's. Producer Trevor Horn and wife Jill Sinclair probably reveal more about the workings of the then fledgling label without the hyperbole of Paul Morley. It's interesting to hear the role that Dave Robinson of Stiff records played in plugging the physical product of The Art Of Noise.
Other artists on their rosta at the time achieved less of a high profile impact including the French torch singing of Anne Pigalle and systems music of Andrew Poppy.Nevertheless they illustrated the high standards that were often set by the record label directors.
The interview is quite poignant as Jill Sinclair has been in an induced coma since 2006 following a tragic accident.
This interview is placed here with the greatest respect to her friends and family and honours the place of ZTT in music history. We all wish for her eventual recovery.
