Of course, you would be robbing them of their much needed profits. So start smoking (to help tobacco company profit), then take your costly medicine to stop. Then start smoking again and…
“Smokers are never told that up to 75% of successful ex-smokers quit unaided,” said a public health expert, who reviewed hundreds of studies into quitting smoking and is now calling for more effective campaigns and policies worldwide.
Drug companies, tobacco control advocates and public health professionals are over-promoting nicotine replacement therapy and other smoking cessation drugs, according to Simon Chapman and Ross MacKenzie from the University of Sydney, Australia.
The pharmaceutical industry is influencing public health practice away from methods that are proven to help the majority of smokers to quit, they said in their review in the journal PLoS Medicine.
“For obvious reasons (a $1.7 billion market in 2006) the pharmaceutical industry is intent on pathologising a process that for decades saw millions of people quit unaided,” Chapman said.

Will it be the iPAD? Makes sense. Bill Gates supposedly on Twitter. What a crock. BAIDU seems to be getting too much publicity. Why? Win Mobile 7 to have two versions. Bing will not hold IP data for more than 6 months. Mobile apps to hit $6.2 billion in 2010. Nexus One getting a bad rap for no apparent reason. Founder of Acer says USA computer companies to be gone sooner than later. Climate folks admit mistake. Wow. FCC delaying broadband plan.

This afternoon, the Coakley campaign convened a press conference to say they had received reports of voters receiving ballots, pre-marked for her opponent, Scott Brown. It would be a serious charge.
But we’re skeptical. [Above] is a screenshot of Coakley’s website taken this afternoon. The press release making the ballot fraud charge is dated yesterday, before any ballots were issued to voters.
With such seers working on the campaign (able to foresee possible ballot fraud before it happened), you’d think the Coakley campaign would have been able to anticipate Brown’s campaign surge. The Coakley release on the allegations now has the correct date on it. It can be found here.
Most likely a last-minute try to have a recount postpone Brown’s probable win.

Really, is that why?
A big reason why the government is inefficient and ineffective is because Washington has outdated technology, with federal workers having better computers at home than in the office.
This startling admission came Thursday from Peter Orszag, who manages the federal bureaucracy for President Barack Obama.
The public is getting a bad return on its tax dollars because government workers are operating with outdated technologies, Orszag said in a statement that kicked off a summit between Obama and dozens of corporate CEOs.
And of course, the solution is more spending and taxes.

No joke — I was worried about this:
Fans of the television show “Lost,” have no fear. The White House does not plan to schedule President Obama’s first State of the Union address on the same night as the premiere of the popular ABC series.
“I don’t foresee a scenario in which millions of people that would hope to finally get some conclusion in ‘Lost’ are preempted by the president,” Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday.
The season premiere of “Lost” is currently scheduled for Feb. 2. Gibbs said the White House will “soon” announce the date for the State of the Union address.

For some odd reason, I’m suddenly craving bacon.
For as long as people have been foreswearing meat, they’ve also been sneaking the occasional corn dog. The difference is, vegetarians used to feel guilty about their sins of the flesh-consumption. Now, thanks to the cachet attached to high-end meat, they are having their burgers without sacrificing the moral high ground.
The word “flexitarian,” meaning someone who mostly eats vegetarian with the occasional cheesesteak thrown in, has been around for a while. But only recently have former vegetarians been so smug about their forays to the dark side. “There is something almost primal about it,” writes lapsed vegetarian Tara Austen Weaver, describing her first meat-buying expedition in The Butcher and the Vegetarian. “I haven’t actually hunted dinner myself, but I set my sights and claimed the prize I sought.” The “primalness” of the meat-eating (or meat-purchasing) experience comes up a lot in these conversion narratives, which inevitably take place at a quaint, family-run butcher shop.
[...]Buying only grass-fed, sustainably raised (and incredibly expensive) meat allows former vegetarians to maintain the same sanctimony they expressed with their old “I don’t eat anything with a face” T shirts. In response to an article by Jonathan Safran Foer about his decision to give up meat, a Brooklyn meat moralist wrote, “lovingly raised meat is not as hard to find as [Safran Foer] seems to think—at least not if you have the good fortune to live near a farmers’ market. Almost all the sheep and cattle and most of the pigs and chickens raised by the farmers who sell at those markets have spent their lives in the fields, free to run, graze and root as their natures dictate.”

A sexual quest that has for years baffled millions of women — and men — may have been in vain. A study by British scientists has found that the mysterious G-spot, the sexual pleasure zone said to be possessed by some women but denied to others, may not exist at all.
The scientists at King’s College London who carried out the study claim there is no evidence for the existence of the G-spot — supposedly a cluster of internal nerve endings — outside the imagination of women influenced by magazines and sex therapists. They reached their conclusions after a survey of more than 1,800 British women.
“Women may argue that having a G-spot is due to diet or exercise, but in fact it is virtually impossible to find real traits,” said Tim Spector, professor of genetic epidemiology, who co-authored the research. “This is by far the biggest study ever carried out and it shows fairly conclusively that the idea of a G-spot is subjective.”
And then there’s this:
Meanwhile, David Matlock, a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgeon, is credited with creating an artificial version of the G-spot. In some cases this has resulted in an over-sensitive zone which induces orgasms when, for example, women drive over bumps in the road.

Former Vice President Al Gore’s global-warming speech Saturday night at Mizner Park drew about a thousand attendees, as well as more than 200 loud protesters.
Stationed outside the Mizner Park Amphitheater, the protesters jeered at Gore as he took the podium and at those walking into the open-air venue to listen to the speech.
“This is the most dangerous crisis we’ve ever faced,” Gore said of climate change. He spoke over a chorus of boos from protesters, who were monitored by at least a dozen uniformed city police officers.
Many of the protesters were with the groups Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow and South Florida Tea Party, the latter of which feels that Gore’s views will eventually lead to increased taxes and flawed business legislation.
The protesters carried drums, bullhorns and posters. One read “Practice what you preach,” accusing Gore of not living a green lifestyle. Another poster read “The masses follow the asses,” depicting the protesters’ opinion that Gore’s message is not backed by scientific evidence.

Fertility is falling and families are shrinking in places— such as Brazil, Indonesia, and even parts of India—that people think of as teeming with children. As our briefing shows, the fertility rate of half the world is now 2.1 or less—the magic number that is consistent with a stable population and is usually called “the replacement rate of fertility”. Sometime between 2020 and 2050 the world’s fertility rate will fall below the global replacement rate.
At a time when Malthusian worries are resurgent and people fear the consequences for an overcrowded planet, the decline in fertility is surprising and somewhat reassuring. It means that worries about a population explosion are themselves being exploded—and it carries a lesson about how to solve the problems of climate change.
Today’s fall in fertility is both very large and very fast. Poor countries are racing through the same demographic transition as rich ones, starting at an earlier stage of development and moving more quickly. The transition from a rate of five to that of two, which took 130 years to happen in Britain—from 1800 to 1930—took just 20 years—from 1965 to 1985—in South Korea. Mothers in developing countries today can expect to have three children. Their mothers had six. In some countries the speed of decline in the fertility rate has been astonishing. In Iran, it dropped from seven in 1984 to 1.9 in 2006—and to just 1.5 in Tehran. That is about as fast as social change can happen.
On the other hand:
The Malthusians are right that the world’s population is still increasing and can do a lot more environmental damage before it peaks at just over 9 billion in 2050.
On a vaguely related topic, many Chinese never learned how not to get pregnant.

Have you seen the new antipiracy video from the software industry? It is execrable! Outdated, kinda offensive, and embarrassingly unhip, the clip has a zero percent chance of achieving its goal of deterring illegal downloads on campus. One young person I shared it with said the video made him want to go pirate something, anything, out of spite.
Don’t Copy That 2─a sequel to the campy 1992 educational video Don’t Copy That Floppy─is telling about the industry’s failure to reach students.
Keith Kupferschmid, the Software & Information Industry Association’s policy director, was magnanimous enough to answer my sputtering questions about some of the video’s inexplicable choices. Like: why rap, in 2009? (That’s like sending a disco star to lecture a ’90s classroom to get its “groove thang on” by respecting copyrights.) If you’re referencing a videogame, why choose Doom, which dates to 1993? Why Klingons, instead of teenage vampires or wizards?
“We just didn’t thinkabout the vampire thing, I suppose,” says Kupferschmid.
It’s possible to be so blinded by the creative failures of Don’t Copy That 2 that you don’t notice its failures on the merits.
More bands are getting on the anti-government intervention (ie, the ‘we kill your Interwebitube connection’ for file sharing) bandwagon.

Seattle teens, kids join H1N1 flu vaccine tests | KOMO News – Seattle, Washington | Local & Regional — Apparently these people neither read the Dvorak Uncensored blog or listen to the NoAgenda show. Once they passed a law saying the vaccine-makers were indemnified and exempt from lawsuits, I’d say no. Were the volunteers informed of this?
Children and teenagers have joined the volunteers testing a swine flu vaccine in our area – one of eight places around the country doing the test trials. One thousand adults are already being tested around the city. But now it’s time to see how kids react to the different doses.Fourteen-year-old Anna Bennett was one of those young people who took a shot to the arm in the fight to knock out the swine flu. She’s one of about 120 young people in the Seattle area – ages 6 months to 17 years old – who are part of a trial to test the new H1N1 vaccine.”It affects a lot of people, and I know that a lot of people have died, and tons of people are getting infected,” Anna says. “So it’s important to do the studies.”The vaccine itself is already being stockpiled for distribution around the nation, even though the Centers for Disease Control say it’s a month behind schedule making it.The testing focuses on the amount of the vaccine to give people. Experts say that’s why it’s important to have specific studies involving children and teenagers.

If this goes into effect, I wonder how many companies, especially small ones, will dump the company phones and somehow compensate employees to use their personal phones for work. With all that dumpage, wanna bet how fast cell phone company bribe money… er, um… campaign contributions flies into Congressional pockets to pass a bill to end this?
The IRS may dial up new rules that could cost you more in taxes if your employer gives you a cell phone.
The feds have proposed taxing 25% of business cell phone use as income.
That means someone who’s in a 28% tax bracket and whose work cell phone costs their company $1,000 a year would pay $70 more in federal income tax.
[...]
The IRS has had a law on the books regarding taxation of personal calls on business cell phones for two decades, but companies have rarely complied because of the difficulty of keeping such records.
[...]
One choice would be for employees to offer proof that they have a personal cell phone that they use during working hours. That would substantiate that the business cell phone was being used solely for work purposes.
Another option being floated would allow companies to use a statistical sampling to figure out how much of their employees’ phone bills are for personal calls.
[...]
The IRS said it is awaiting responses to its proposals from the public.

Tech Dirt - May 21, 2009:
One tool in the FCC’s investigative arsenal is the ability to inspect radio gear, like TV stations’ transmitters, but the Commission also says that this extends to things like WiFi routers, cordless and cell phones, remote garage door openers, TV remotes, or “anything using RF energy.” This means that if you have any of those products, or anything with a radio, the FCC thinks it has the right to search your house.
The FCC contends the authority stems from the Communications Act of 1934, but as Threat Level points out, it’s never been challenged in court, mainly because it’s a relatively recent phenomenon for essentially every American household to have so many radio devices.
While it’s unlikely that the FCC will begin raiding homes to confiscate WiFi routers and garage door openers, there is speculation that should FCC agents enter a home and see evidence of unrelated criminal behavior, that evidence can be used for criminal prosecution. This could give law enforcement a potential back door around search and seizure laws, a move which certainly merits some concern.

U.S. Probes Whether Afghan Forces Colluded With Taliban in Deadly Attack - FOXNews.com — Interesting report.
Afghanistan — A pre-dawn attack by the Taliban that killed three American soldiers and six other coalition troops earlier this month is raising new questions about many of the Afghan soldiers who were supposed to be fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with them.
Officials are investigating whether the Afghan troops may have colluded with the Taliban in the brazen assault on the remote coalition outpost along the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border. Their findings could complicate further the already difficult challenges U.S. trainers are having with the Afghan Army.

I wonder how a RealDoll (link is NSFW) would do?
Researchers are giving a robot its own Facebook profile page to help foster meaningful relationships with people.
The page will be populated with interactions the robot has with people as well as photos of the time it spends in human company.
Its creators hope that embedding it in a social web will demonstrate that a sustainable friendship can grow up between man and machine.
The coupling of robot and social network is the idea of Dr Nikolaus Mavridis and co-researchers as they look into ways of overcoming the reluctance of people to stay in touch with robots.
While robots that can engage people have been produced before now, research suggests that humans lose interest - at most a few weeks after being introduced - as the behavioural repertoire of the machine is exhausted.
In a paper on the pre-print website Arxiv.org server, the researchers say they want to find out if this can be thwarted by giving humans and robots a pool of shared memories and if they are part of the same social circle of friends.
[...]
The prototype is based on a PeopleBot machine from ActivRobots to which they have added a range finder, touch screen and stereo camera. The current prototype is called “Sarah” but when the project begins this will be swapped for a machine with the face of Islamic scholar Ibn Sina, aka Avicenna.
