The Buenos Aires Toy Museum, Historieta.

National Day of ArgentinaMay 24, 2010, 5:44pmToday (Tuesday) is the 200th Anniversary of Argentina’s 1810 May Revolution which was the last in a series of political events that installed the first government in Argentina not controlled by Spain. There was no violence but it is called a revolution because it ushered dramatic change in Argentina’s political, social, and economical landscapes.
Argentina is the second largest country in South America, constituted as a federation of 23 provinces and an autonomous city, Buenos Aires.
It is the eighth largest country in the world in land area and the largest among Spanish-speaking nations.
Argentina’s population is around 36 million, with 85 percent of European origin, mostly Spanish and Italian. More than 90 percent are Roman Catholics. The country has abundant natural resources, a well-educated population, an export-oriented agricultural sector, and a relatively diversified industrial base.
Argentina is a full member of the Mercosur (Mercado Comun del Sur) – the Southern Common Market in English – together with Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela, and five associate members, namely, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Argentina has emphasized Mercosur, which has some supranational legislative functions, as its first international ;priority.
Argentina is a founding signatory and permanent consulting member of the Antarctic Treaty System and the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat is based in Buenos Aires.
Similarities in culture, religion, and history have brought the Philippines and Argentina close to each other. Their peoples share the same passionate temperament and religiosity, as well as fierce commitment to freedom and human rights.

Scientists in the US have succeeded in developing the first living cell to be controlled entirely by synthetic DNA. "This is the first time any synthetic DNA has been in complete control of a cell," said Dr Venter.
'New industrial revolution'
Dr Venter and his colleagues hope eventually to design and build new bacteria that will perform useful functions.
"I think they're going to potentially create a new industrial revolution," he said.
