called Operation Flaming Dart. Shortly after, Soviet missiles arrive in North Vietnam in preparation for raids.
Bundy and McNamara send memo to LBJ that more serious action must be taken if the US intends to win the war. if not, it would be better to withdraw
with the help of a few younger officiers, Khanh takes control back from Minh and others

As a precaution after the unproked attacks on US ships in the Gulf of Tonkin, Congress almost unanimously decides to pass the Resolution, giving LBJ completely control over decisions in Vietnam, taking whatever measures needed to protect US troops.
Pressure from the Joint Chiefs of Staff cause LBJ to begin bombing North Vietnam. Accounts by both these men and the press embellished the actual attacks in the Gulf of Tonkin, so LBJ hesitantly agrees but does not wish to further US involvement past this.
In response to S. Vietnam's raid of 2 bases, North Vietnamese boats attack the U.S. which is sitting nearby in the Gulf of Tonkin. LBJ decides against immediate retaliation but, increases US presence in the area for cautionary reasons.
LBJ does not approve of bombing immediately; asks Pentagon to remain in planning phase
Meets with Khanh and promises US support. Returns to US and tells LBJ that increased support is needed.
