The World Urban Forum was established by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing problems facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies.
In the space of a few short years, the Forum has turned into the world's premier conference on cities. Since the first meeting in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002, the Forum has grown in size and stature as it travelled to Barcelona in 2004, Vancouver 2006, Nanjing in 2008 and Rio de Janeiro in 2010.
The Forum is one of the most open and inclusive gatherings of its kind on the international stage. It brings together government leaders, ministers, mayors, diplomats, members of national, regional and international associations of local governments, non-governmental and community organizations, professionals, academics, grassroots women's organizations, youth and slum dwellers groups as partners working for better cities.

The global scientific community must deliver to society the knowledge necessary to assess the risks humanity is facing from global change. It must provide knowledge of how society can effectively mitigate dangerous changes and cope with changes we cannot manage.
Based on the latest scientific evidence, the London Planet Under Pressure conference will provide a comprehensive update of our knowledge of the Earth system and the pressure our planet is now under. The London conference will focus the scientific community’s and the wider world’s attention on climate, ecological degradation, human well-being, planetary thresholds, food security, energy, governance across scales and poverty alleviation.
The conference will discuss solutions, at all scales, to move societies on to a sustainable pathway. It will provide scientific leadership towards the 2012 UN Rio +20 conference, also in 2012.
Guiding the direction for the conference is the International Council for Science’s five grand challenges for global sustainability research: observations, forecasting, thresholds, governance and economic requirements, and innovation (technological, political and societal). The conference will also support international assessment processes, for example the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the new biodiversity assessment, plus the Millennium Development Goals.
The programme will be designed to attract senior policymakers, industry leaders, NGOs, young scientists, the media, health specialists, and academics from many disciplines.

Every three years since 1997, the World Water Forum mobilizes creativity, innovation, competence and know-how in favour of water.
The five World Water Forums organised since 1997 have placed water on the international political agenda. They have undoubtedly contributed to a global awareness of the water issues.
The Forum must be perceived first of all as a tri-annual process initiated as soon as a host country and a host city have been selected by a series of preparatory processes which combine thematic, regional and political activities. These processes mobilise thousands of water stakeholders over the 5 continents and culminate in the Forum week. However this week is not an end: it represents simply an important milestone in a continuous process combining dialogue, action and monitoring of the results.
With a unifying and open-minded image, the World Water Forum strives to open its activities to the entire water stakeholders of the political arena and of the civil society. The World Water Council, the host city and the host country promote interactions and partnerships at all geographic scales and between all actors, with a special focus on developing countries.

Global, regional and industry agendas continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace as a result of the interdependence and fragility inherent in the global economy. To respond to this reality, the World Economic Forum convenes leaders from all walks of life at its Annual Meeting to work together in response to our rapidly changing world.
Mastering complexities has emerged as the core competence demanded of leaders tasked with ensuring the well-being of their stakeholders. As the programme for the Annual Meeting 2012 will focus on this theme and explore the leadership implications for countries, companies and communities, we particularly look forward to your active participation in Davos.
For more than four decades, the Annual Meeting has provided leaders from industry, government, academia, civil society and the media with an unrivalled platform to shape the global agenda and catalyse solutions at the start of each year.
The diversity and the informal and collaborative “Spirit of Davos” mean that, as well as engaging with familiar faces, participants have the chance to connect with new actors, fresh perspectives and different thinking.

The Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan, Korea follows meetings in Rome, Paris and Accra that helped transform aid relationships between donors and partners into true vehicles for development cooperation.
Based on 50 years of field experience and research, the five principles that resulted from these fora encourage local ownership, alignment of development programmes around a country’s development strategy, harmonisation of practices to reduce transaction costs, the avoidance of fragmented efforts and the creation of results frameworks.
Looking ahead, diverse sources of finance, knowledge and expertise play a key role in the future of development - and broad, dynamic partnerships will continue to give these principles relevance.

The Germany Federal Government is organizing an international conference in Bonn to examine the nexus of water, energy and food security. The event will be hosted in the former German federal parliament, the Bundestag.
Organized under the auspices of Germany’s Federal Development Ministry (BMZ) and Federal Environment Ministry (BMU), the conference is a step in the run-up to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (“Rio plus 20”) scheduled for 2012. With the thematic focus in Bonn on the interrelationships between water, energy and food security, the Federal Government has decided to address an important aspect of the preparatory process for the Rio+20 conference and take a rigorously cross-sectoral approach to the development of a “green economy” that can facilitate sustainable development and alleviate poverty.
The Bonn conference pursues two objectives: on the one hand, to develop cross-sector solutions for achieving water, energy and food security; on the other, to position the interface of water, energy and food security within the discourse of the “Rio plus 20” process and “green economy”.
The international participants at this two-day conference will include around 400 high-ranking decision-makers and decision-shapers from the spheres of politics, academia, the United Nations, civil society and the private sector.
The conference is being carefully prepared through a participatory process (the Bonn 2011 Process). The overall concept is designed to produce concrete outcomes in plenary sessions, workshops and cross-sectoral dialogue formats. The aim is to arrive at decisions that will make a real difference in terms of sustainable impacts.

The objective of this note is to provide guidance to Member States and other stakeholders in responding to the invitation from Second Preparatory Committee “to provide their inputs and contributions in writing by 1 November 2011 for inclusion in a compilation document to serve as basis for the preparation of zero draft of the outcome document”. The above request was transmitted by the Co-Chairs of the UNCSD Bureau in a letter dated 14 March 2011.
Three principles underlie the guidance note. First, it is meant to facilitate the preparation of inputs, and is not intended to be binding in any way; Member States, Major Groups and UN system organizations are invited to use this guidance note as appropriate. Second, all submissions will be posted in full as submitted on the UNCSD website (http://www.uncsd2012.org/rio20/). Third, the guidance provided here pertains exclusively to the provision of inputs for the compilation document, and should not be construed in any way as prejudging the structure or content of the zero draft of the outcome document..

Creating green growth is the fundamental challenge of our time and success requires the audacity to lead. Instead of waiting for 193 nations to fall in line and decide on a coherent set of global framework conditions, Green Growth Leaders have decided to take lead and lead by example. Therefore, on October 12-13 2011, hundreds of government and business leaders from around the world meet in Copenhagen to examine green growth from three perspectives:
1) State of the Green Economy
This perspective will determine how far along we are in the transformation process towards the green economy and define tipping points for selected technologies
2) Best Practice
Around the world companies and cities have decided to seize the opportunity to outgreen the competition. This perspective will explore best cases of green growth, where companies and cities are leading by example and look at how they achieved it
3) Next practice – The Green Economy Outlook
Green growth holds massive potential for job creation and business opportunities. This perspective will quantify opportunities and explore ways for cities and businesses to accelerate green growth
The initiative is structured as a two day event. On day one working groups consisting of experts from policy, business, civil society and science will apply the three perspectives above to focus on different technologies within energy, mobility, water and waste. The findings on day one are discussed among high level stakeholders and presented to the public on day two.
Media- and technology partnerships for “Take Lead” are available. We are looking for partners within Smart Cities, Low Energy Buildings, Electric Vehicles, Energy Efficiency, Smart Grid, Waste Management, Biomass, Water Management, Renewable Energy, Communication, Policy and other areas within green growth.

The Ministry of the Environment is organising a high-level conference aimed at consultation between EU member states and key countries in the process of preparing for the Rio+20 conference in 2012, presentation of the best examples of green initiatives aimed at presenting each partner's position, and consultation aimed at bringing positions closer and supporting UNDESA in preparing the ambitious result of the RIO+20 conference.
One of the two key topics for the conference is green economy in the context of reducing poverty, and for this reason the meeting in Warsaw will also serve as consideration for the practical examples of the way in which this objective can be achieved. Green economy is a tool for achieving sustainable development. The means to achieve this may be diverse. The conference in Warsaw is to be a forum for exchange of ideas and experiences in national, regional and local areas concerning the best examples of applying green economy, serving as the basis for developing specific solutions which may be adopted during the Rio+20 conference.
The main feature will be presentation of the EU Environment Council's report of 10 October 2011 and a discussion of practical examples presented by 10 member states (the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Italy, Great Britain) and 10 key countries within the RIO+20 process (Argentina, Brazil, China, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa, the USA and representatives of the AOSIS and ALBA groups), whose presentations may indicate political directions and create fields of discussion concerning the means to achieve a green economy and support the RIO+20 process.

Convening researchers from around the world, this UNRISD Conference will create a forum for analysis aimed at developing a conceptual and policy framework that will position social dimensions at the centre of green economy and sustainable development. Policy reports and other publications will inform the UNCSD 2012 (Rio+20) preparatory process and subsequent policy discussions.
The conference will critically examine the following interrelated themes:
1. Competing Paradigms - How is the notion of green economy itself, and the consideration of social dimensions, being framed, and with what effects in terms of influencing policy agendas and shaping development models?
2. The Challenge of Policy Coherence - What role can social policy, in association with economic and environmental policy, play in minimizing costs, maximizing benefits and building resilience, especially for vulnerable groups? How does the green economy agenda connect with other sustainable development objectives?
3. Agency, Interests and Coalitions - What forms of participation, contestation, coalitions, alliances and compromises are emerging - or might need to emerge - to promote green economy approaches that contribute to sustainable development and poverty eradication?
4. Community Values, Institutions and Dynamics - How is green economy perceived and interpreted locally? How do local level contexts and dynamics affect – and how are they affected by – external interventions?
5. The Social Construction of Markets – How do societal norms and pressures, as well as public and private regulation and governance, shape market relations and business behaviour associated with green economy and sustainable development?
6. Sustainability, Agriculture and Rural Development - What are the consequences of the restructuring of food production, finance, energy and consumption patterns associated with green economy for employment, livelihood security and ecological sustainability in rural areas?

The General Assembly is the main deliberative organ of the UN. Decisions on important questions, such as those on peace and security, admission of new members and budgetary matters, require a two-thirds majority. Decisions on other questions are by simple majority.

The Zaragoza Conference aims to contribute to the Rio+20 process, building on the results of the Official Side Event at the 2nd UNCSD Preparatory Committee (Prepcom2) on “How the Green Economy depends on” organized by UN Water and UNSGAB. The Conference attempts also to respond to some of the concerns of developing countries highlighted for the upcoming UNCSD (A/CONF.216/7). A call has been made for developing a UN Green Economy Road Map and for a toolbox or best practices guide of actions for transforming into a green economy, in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. Toward this aim, the Secretariat Synthesis Report on Best Practices and Lessons Learnt on Objectives and Themes of the Conference (A/CONF.216/PC, Jan 2011) points out that international preparations for UNCSD should strengthen support for sustainable development by providing a platform for exchanging best practices and lessons learnt.
As a contribution to the Rio + 20 process, the Conference aims to show case how water is a key factor in the green economy as shown in specific practical examples in the different regions of the world. The aim is to focus on actions, reflect on lessons learnt from practical implementation experiences, and highlight the importance of the overall specific context. This will support the process of moving to action in preparation to Rio+20.

The Latin American and Caribbean Regional Meeting Preparatory to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will be held at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago from 7 to 9 September 2011. The meeting will address gaps and progress in implementation of sustainable development commitments since 1992, a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and the institutional framework for sustainable development. The expected outcome of this meeting is a consensus document reflecting the region’s position vis-à-vis the Rio+20 Conference, including recommendations for the draft negotiating document. Sub-regional meetings are being organized by CARICOM, with support from UN-DESA, and the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD), for the Caribbean and Central America, respectively. The outcomes of these meetings are expected to feed into the regional meeting in September.

The Conference will highlight effective ways in which civil society, in partnership with other actors, can contribute to fostering sustainability and encouraging civic involvement through volunteerism. The title reflects the power of citizen engagement to bring about societal change in various aspects of our lives: economical, cultural and environmental. The Conference is about connecting the dots between sustainable development and voluntary organizations empowering responsive citizens to act together and build real, sustainable communities. It is also expected to make substantive contributions to the Rio+20 Conference (UNCSD 2012) and the two-day special session of the General Assembly on the 10th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers.
