"What would a visit to Athens be without going to the Acropolis to see the Parthenon? And still people ask why the Partheon is so important. It's because it was the most perfect building built by the world's most advanced civilization and even though we have been studying it for centuries we are still not sure how they did it." Openness, peering, sharing, acting globallyParticipatory organizationCollaborative organizationThe way organizations work is about to change! It will take time, and the old guard will definitely not like it, traditional business models are about to be extinguished, Web 2.0 will form the framework for greater participation and empowerment of individuals and organizations through the digitization, democratization, and transparency of web enabled technologies. Things to watch out for:- wireless networks and access - new ways of communicating - i.e. ipod touch; guided tours, interactive content, gaming, VOIP, applications, targeted product/service/ technology communication- complete connectivity - connectivity of our work tools, home tools, and play tools - i.e. iphone, cross-platform tools, (camera, messaging, calling, web, Content (Web, documents), Entertainment (music, video, , Communication (sms, VOIP, 3G)- democratizing energy - killing off of government utilities as we know them - new energy sources (solar, wind, geothermal, wave, self-generative) - buildings will be self-powered and actually put energy back into the grid, utility companies will manage energy and it’s supply, rather than create or generate it. Individuals, companies and landholders will build, engineer and create energy ‘farm’ small town will become self-reiant from larger utility companies producing their own energy and then selling the surplus back into the grid. - individuals, organizations and companies will organize themselves in a collaborative nature to create a greater common good and value for each of their members, based upon a similar model to those people that were labeled ‘hippies’ who choose to ‘get-off’ the grid and maybe now considered ahead of their time but without the technology to facilitate a greater societal benefit. - The association between individuals and organizations will change with more dynamic and transient labor market more closely associated with consulting firms and movie production than todays hierarchal organizational models. Small teams will solve evolving challenges within an organization and be dispersed upon discovery of the solution. Team members will self-organize themselves based upon what takes their interest and what they ‘burn for’.- knowledge management will be less structured and more complete, consisting of greater transparency, and based upon openness and sharing between peers. - challenges will be solved by both members of an organization and non-memers. - communication will be based non-traditional methods - IM, Multiplayer games, wiki’s, blogs. virtual worlds, to name a few - outcomes will be predicted by the crowd, both within and outside organizations - Wisdom of the crowds, James Schwoski- User generated content - wikipedia, - Co-colaboration between many; (companies, customers, suppliers, users, employees), - Co-creation between many (companies, customers, suppliers, users, employees), - the speed of innovation and the way it is carried out will radically change with firms employing external brainpower to solve internal challenges- old industries like agriculture, airlines, energy production, movie, telecommunications, music etc. will be revolutionized and completely overhauled by new technology, business models and mind-set from the new labor force ‘net gen’ - communities, organization, and individuals will connect in new and different ways that create value for all parties, through open models and communication systems that promote transparency, openness and sharing. - individuals will be more comfortable with self-employment than working in organizations offering their skills and services on a more adhoc and project / need basis. Enabling them to do what they enjoy and burn for. - organizations will become much less structured and hierarchal with flatter organizations with self-organizing teams and individuals the norm. - our definition of a company will change as will our associated laws and governing rules. - individuals will more readily mobilize, form groups, faster and more efficiently than that of governments and organizations. - governments will become more transparent and democratic- huge amounts of information will be made available to the public out of which great amounts of innovation will spur.- mash-up’s will become normal practice and individuals will become more creative and use new media and technology to share their thoughts, challenges.

The Art of Possibility is written by acclaimed Boston Philharmonic composer and professor Benjamin Zander, and his wife Rosamund Stone Zander, who is a family therapist and landscape painter. I first heard about the book through Garr Reynold's blog 'Presentation Zen' and from their I saw his TED presentation and several others on the web which inspired me to read the book. The book is broken into 12 chapters which provide anecdotes to highlight the main point and its relevance. Some key quotes and stories included:"Out of the boat" (p.5) - a great expression or metaphor for explaining that you don't know where the track is anymore i.e. you've lost your point of reference.Giving an A - The story from the student in Ben's "In Taiwan, I was Number 68 out of 70 student, I come to Boston and Mr. Zander says I am an A. Very confusing. I walk about, three weeks, very confused, I am Number 68, but Mr. Zander says I am an A student...I am Number 68, but Mr. Zander says I am an A. One day I discover much happier A than Number 68. So I decide I am an A." (p.33)Cynic - p39It's All InventedGiving an A - (p.51) Letter regarding 'our terms'"No such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing" - (p.64)Parable of the 4 brothers & dying father - (p.65)"they need me everywhere" - (p.67)'White sheets' - (p.70) Great way for leaders to receive feedback from their staff and teamLeading from any chair - Violinist Eugene Lehner's Story about letting others lead and empowerment (p.72)Rule # 6 - 'Don't take yourself so goddam seriously' (p.79) - tale of two prime ministers in a meetingMoving Pride story (p.89)Central vs. Calculating Self (p.95)"How Fascinating" - how to approach a mistake differently (p.103)Good vs. Bad - is the human way of categorization, nature makes no judgement. Humans do (p.105)Søren Kierkegaard, Either/Or "If I were to wish for anything I should not wish for wealth and power, but for the passionate sense of what can be, for the eye, which, ever young and ardent, seees the possible. Pleasure disapointments, possibility never, And what wine is so sparkling, what so fragrant, what so intoxicating as possibility?" - (p.113)

In John Medina's new book Brain Rules he provides 12 rules which govern basic elements of the human brain and the extraordinary way in which it works. The author takes an extremely complex subject area (neurology) and enables the rest of us to understand through the use of story telling and examples that we can all relate too. Below are the twelve rules, however to truly appreciate them you need to read this great book and create some of those 'ah-hah' moments yourself. The book also provides a fascinting insight into the evolution of the human being and how we came to be how we are and what evolutionary processes got us to this point. Some of the better points include that of myth of multitasking, the necessity of sleep, repetition, gender differeces and the benefits of exercise. EXERCISE | Rule #1: Exercise boosts brain power. SURVIVAL | Rule #2: The human brain evolved, too. WIRING | Rule #3: Every brain is wired differently. ATTENTION | Rule #4: We don't pay attention to boring things. SHORT-TERM MEMORY | Rule #5: Repeat to remember. LONG-TERM MEMORY | Rule #6: Remember to repeat. SLEEP | Rule #7: Sleep well, think well. STRESS | Rule #8: Stressed brains don't learn the same way. SENSORY INTEGRATION | Rule #9: Stimulate more of the senses. VISION | Rule #10: Vision trumps all other senses. GENDER | Rule #11: Male and female brains are different. EXPLORATION | Rule #12: We are powerful and natural explorers.

A cool concept where you can either upload your t-shirt design (for the creative person) or buy one of the many t-shirts designed by designers around the world. The designs are ranked by popularity, voted for by anyone that signs into the site. The cool thing is that there is tons of t-shirts (content) being uploaded all the time, giving people that want a t-shirt that's original and isn't sold in your local H&M department store. Check them out www.designbyhumans.com

A cool new application that enables you to do all sorts of cool stuff with images. The application is in beta stage at the moment. But it's a really nifty little piece of software that you can share images via email, take screen shots, upload to the web direct from the application and then share link, as well as do basic editing on the image (see picture) then send it to a friend for them to check it out. Part of the beauty of the application is the simplicity of the tool plus you don't have a whole heap of stuff you don't need. Plus the Skitch logo is awesome. Plasq also have some other cool app's, check out www.plasq.comUntil next time...
