Brown was hanged for high treason in the presence of federal troops and a crowd of curious observers. Public reaction was immdediate and intense. Many people considered him to be a martyr.
John Brown led a band of 21 men black and white to Harpers ferry to seize the federal arsenal, distibute arms to slaves in the area, and begin an uprising.
