By 1914, most of Africa was under European control. The land had been divided by the Berlin Conference, giving land to the European nations that had been invited. Only two lands remained uncolonized. One was the Ethiopian Empire, in the Horn of Africa. The other was the Republic of Liberia, on the west coast of Africa.
In 1899, the Boer War took place. Boers were Dutch farmers, and they were the first people to settle in South America. The British took over and forced the Boers on the Great Trek, pushing the farmers north. This war started after diamonds and gold were discovered. Guerrilla tactics were introduced. The British put the Boers' wives and children into disease-ridden concentration camps (bad conditions.)
In 1898, the Spanish-American war broke out. This war was between Spain and America. After the war, America has gained control of Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
In 1898, the Battle of Adwa took place between the Ethiopians and invading Italians. The Ethiopians defeated the invading Italians by tricking them. Ethiopia was one of the only two nations that remained uncolonized after the Berlin Conference. Italy colonized two near-by areas, which were impoverished. Italy decided to invade the Ethiopian empire, and lost the climactic battle.
in 1893, Queen Liliuokalani took the throne of Hawaii. She was the last queen of Hawaii and came to the throne after her brother died. Her brother saw nationalism in other countries and decided that he wanted to bring that pride to Hawaii. The Untied States Dole pineapple farmers killed him so his ideas would not spread. Queen Liliuokalani tried to ban all white people off the island when she came to power, and she was captured and put on house arrest by Sanford Dole. The island was taken as an annexation to the Untied States.
In the years of 1884 and 1885, the Berlin Conference met to discuss terms for African colonization. Leaders of European nations met to basically "carve up" Africa and divide it among themselves. No Africans were invited to the conference, therefore they did not receive any land.
In 1869, the British completed the Suez Canal, which linked the Mediterranean and Red Seas. The French had started the canal, but they could not afford it, so the British bought it and completed it. The British gained control of the Suez Canal.
In 1857, the East India Company collapsed because of the Sepoy Rebellion. The Sepoy Rebellion is when the Sepoys, indian soldiers, rebelled against the Company, run by the British. After this the Raj began. The Raj was the British rule over India.
