Jane Komeiji - CLAD 2007 Honoree
Okage sama de. This popular phrase has been translated from the Japanese as "I am what I am thanks to you." It is also the title of Jane Okamoto Komeiji's well-read book, co-authored with Dorothy Ochiai Hazama in 1985, about the Japanese experience in Hawai'i from 1885-1985 as well as the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i (JCCH) permanent historical exhibition - which opened thanks to the work of Komeiji and a planning committee in 1994. In 1991, Komeiji was asked to chair the JCCH committee that would be responsible for creating the JCCH permanent historical exhibition, Okage Sama De: The Story of the Japanese in Hawai'i. Komeiji along with the planning committee opened the enlightening exhibition at JCCH's grand opening in 1994. Always thinking in the mindset of an educator, she continued to help the JCCH in creating many other exhibitions that would teach others about the Japanese American experience in Hawai'i. These included Lotus in Paradise: Buddhism and Japanese American Identity in Hawaii, Japanese American Contemporary Artists and Shishu Ladies of Hilo. In addition to the exhibitions, Komeiji helped to extablish many key components of the JCCH in its early years such as the Collections, Resource Center, and the Gallery Gift Shop. In 2003, Komeiji initiated and completed the JCCH exhibition titled, 'A'ala: The Story of a Japanese Community in Hawai'i. Other publications that Komeiji helped to publish include Hawai'i Japanese American Soldiers: What Did We Fight ...

Day of Remembrance 2009 at JANM
"Forging Alliances: Connecting Nikkei to Current Immigration" was the theme for the 2009 Day of Remembrance held at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. The event was organized by NCRR (Nikkei for Civil RIghts & Redress), JACL Pacific Southwest District, and JANM. The Day of Remembrance is held each year to commemorate President Franklin Roosevelt's signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, which authorized the unconstitutional forced removal of over 120000 Japanese Americans from the west coast and Hawaii during World War II.
