• The Battle of Lexington and Concord
  Apr 19, 1775

  The first shots were fired between the British and American troops. The site of the "shot heard 'round the world".

• Paul Revere's Ride
  Apr 18, 1775

  Paul Revere and William Dawes rode through the countryside warning the American colonists that "The British are Coming".

• First Continental Congress
  Sep 5, 1774

  56 delegates from 12 colonies met in Philadelphia to discuss response to the Intolerable Acts. They declared that colonists should have the same rights as Englishmen.

• Boston Tea Party
  Dec 16, 1773

  A group of American colonists, calling themselves the Sons of Liberty, dressed as Native Americans, boarded British ships, and dumped 342 crates of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest the tax on tea.

• Boston Massacre
  Mar 5, 1770

  The shooting of 5 colonists by British troops. The British opened fire after things were thrown at them- possibly rocks or snowballs.

• Townshend Acts
  1767

  Laws passed taxing colonists on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea.

• Stamp Act
  1765

  British impose a direct tax on the colonists on stamps, which affected anything printed or written on paper.

• Sugar Act
  1764

  British put a tax on wine, sugar, and other important items as a way for the colonists to repay the English for their support in the French and Indian War.

• French and Indian War
  Jul 1, 1754

  The colonists (including George Washington) fought with the British against the French and Indians over possession of lands in the New World
