HBO Archives: Archival Collection: The March of Time®
From 1935 to 1967, Time Inc’s newsreel series, “The March of Time®” chronicled the events of our lives. The March of Time® separated itself from its competitors using its trademark “pictorial journalism,” mixing highly-produced, long-form, documentary-style stories with dramatic re-enactments. These award-winning motion pictures recorded global events and brought them to big screens around the world and then later, television. The collection also contains historic footage dating back to 1913.

45 Websites For Students To Create Original Artwork Online | art, creativity, student art | Making Teachers Nerdy
new and innovative ways. From abstract art to pointillism, students now can click and draw their way into original works of art, and today’s freebie gives you a great list of places to begin.
The sites are labeled by grade level to help guide you to those that best suit your students. In addition, I’ve added ratings to give teachers and students an idea of how much interactivity is available at each site. Some allow students to create from beginning to end, while others simply generate the final product with minimal effort. What you will not find here are basic virtual coloring sheets. I tried to find sites that would give students a chance to generate their own original works of art. What could be better?

Votetocracy:
Votetocracy is a place where every citizen can see every bill currently in congress, vote on those bills and send those votes to thier representatives. The site has been created by three regular citizens that felt it was time to get engaged with American politics. During our efforts to become more educated about our government we discovered that it was not all that easy. We found plenty of information. But it is written in difficult to understand political speak. We also found that it was not particularly easy to act on this information. When we found bills on government websites we had no measurable way to act on it. Sure, you could write a letter or contact our representatives, but had no real way of knowing that it would actually accomplish anything. These things felt like barriers. It was then that we decided that there had to be a better way and Votetocracy is the the result of our efforts.

If you follow this blog, you know that I am a huge proponent of the use of video in the classroom to enhance a lesson. A new site from Alexander Street, an electronic publisher of award-winning online collections in the humanities and social sciences.
American History in Video provides the largest and richest online collection of video available for the study of American history—2,000 hours and more than 5,000 titles on completion. The collection’s wealth of video and multiplicity of perspectives allow students and scholars to see, experience, and study American history in ways never before possible. A Critical Video Edition, American History in Video’s suite of tools—searches and browses powered by Semantic Indexing and searchable transcripts synchronized to video—give the ability to drill down in seconds to find the footage of interest from thousands of hours of video. This collection is an exclusive collaboration with A&E Television Networks and features some of their most important documentaries and series from The History Channel®, A&E Network®, and Biography®. Historical coverage ranges from the lost colony of Roanoke through the 1988 Vicennes Affair in the Persian Gulf; biographical coverage ranges from eighteenth century figures such as Benedict Arnold and Daniel Boone to modern day figures such as Thurgood Marshall and Helen Thomas.
An excellent feature that distinguishes this site from others is the ability to “cut up” the videos to create your own video clips. It’s the perfect way to infuse video into your lesson.
Here is a sample:
A great resource for any Social Studies teacher in any school.

I have been following Tammy Worcester in Twitter for quite some time. She always has great resources to share and consistently contributes to my PLN. This was my first opportunity to see her present and it was a pleasure. Her session covered her favorite Google Tips and Tricks and many other great web 2.0 sites that could be easily implemented in the Here is a list of what was covered in this excellent session:
Blogger
JamStudio
VozMe
Issuu
Imagecodr
Vocaroo
Online Stopwatch
Imagination Cubed
Here is a link to the Google Tips and Tricks she covered.
If you ever have the opportunity to see her present, take it. She was very good.

First up…my presentation, “Web Tools to Enhance the Classroom Experience.” This was the first time I’ve ever presented at a conference of this magnitude. Sure, I’ve presented to teachers here at school and I presented at a small educational symposium at Central Florida Community College back in September, but I could never have expected what happened at my first session ever. In a room with a capacity of about 190 people, approximately 260 people crammed into Room N320A at the Orange County Convention Center. I started the presentation about 10 minutes early since we couldn’t fit anyone else in the room. The session went great and included many excellent questions from the audience about how they could implement the tools I covered in their own When the session concluded, there was a line of about 15 people waiting to see me, most shook my hand and told me how much they enjoyed the session, others said they wished I was their technology person at their school. To say I was blown away would be a blatant understatement. I was stopped several times on the exhibit floor that afternoon, and many times in the lobby of my hotel.
It was incredible…not because of the new, short-lived popularity, but because so many people found the tools I presented useful. My goal as a technology specialist is always to provide my teachers with the tools that might light a fire in that student who may not quite be “getting it.” This is the reason I wanted to present in the first place and is the reason I hope to present many, many more times and at conferences other than only FETC. Thank you to everyone that attended the session. I hope all of you found something useful.
If you were unable to attend, you can see all of the tools (plus many more) at the wiki I created for the presentation: http://fetc.pbwiki.com. It’s a public wiki, so if you have a favorite tool you would like to add, please, feel free.

Panoramas.dk is created by Hans Nyberg a commercial photographer in Denmark
My intention with this site is to make immersive panoramic images also called VR Photography more known among the general public.
Interactive panoramas is a young media and as such it has for many years been known among entusiastic photographers and multimedia creators. An interactive VR panorama can not be seen in a book or on a printed image. If you print the panorama it gets a completely different expression.

Behold | Search High Quality Flickr Images
BeholdTM is a search engine for high-quality Flickr images. It aims to answer your queries based on what is inside the images — at the pixel level. It offers a completely new way to search for images, using techniques of computer vision. It is different to standard image search engines, such as Flickr or Google, because those search through images using only image tags and filenames.
Behold looks for high quality images, so you don’t have to sift through hundreds of poorly taken pictures to find a good one. Behold uses both aesthetic and technical quality indicators to find some of the best images available online.
Behold draws computational power from Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to handle large volumes of images.

Aside from being a difficult word to spell, plagiarism is a serious offense that all teachers should be wary of. We’ve all heard of it, but how many of us are taking the time to check the written works of our students to be sure they are not just copying and pasting their information? For quite some time, TurnItIn has been available to teachers as a means of checking for plagiarism, but the price tag of possibly thousands of dollars turns many schools and districts off. I recently came across two new free alternatives that did quite a nice job of detecting copious copying.
The Plagiarism Checker is a dead simple copy and paste solution. Simply copy the student’s work and paste it into the website. Click on “Check the Paper” and see your results. The Plagiarism Checker takes lines of the text and performs a Google search on that text. You will then see the passages that the checker believes to be plagiarized and provides links to those searches for you. If you suspect a student has plagiarized, this is a great, easy solution designed as a project for the University of Maryland at College Park Department of Education. Here is a video about what the service is and how it works:
The second solution, which is more like TurnItIn, is PlagiarismDetect.com. PlagiarismDetect allows you to both copy and paste text into the checker or upload the document to be checked. You have the options to scan the web (default), PDF files, blogs and books. You can also choose between a “Deep Analysis” or a “Light Analysis.” Both options take only seconds to complete. The results of the scan contain information on the percentage of the document believed to have been plagiarized and the links to the original sources of the suspected text. It’s an excellent free resource for teachers to scan student work and, even better, a way for students to ensure they will not have any issues when they turn in their work. Check out the video FAQ for PlagiarismDetect here.

Let’s face it, even with all of this great technology we have available to us as teachers, we all still use a lot of worksheets. If you are a new teacher, you do not have the luxury of years and years worth of worksheets at your disposal to use. WorksheetWorks.com makes creating a worksheet a breeze. At WorksheetWorks, you can create custom worksheets in dozens of subjects ranging from simple math and English to geography and puzzles. The worksheets are customizable, for example, I’ve created a dice counting worksheet and I was able to specify how many dice I wanted to include, the dice positioning and paper size. Once you set all of the parameters for your custom worksheet, a .pdf file is created for you to download and save for later or open the worksheet immediately to print it out. This is an excellent resource for use in the at all grade levels.
