  Drafted by Thomas Jefferson between June 11 and June 28, 1776, the Declaration of Independence is at once the nation's most cherished symbol of liberty

• 1 & 2 Continental congress
  May 15, 1775

  Met in Philadelphia All colonies had representatives except Georgia Gunfire was exchanged and eight Americans were killed before the minutemen retreated.

• Social contract theory
  1762

  The social contract theory holds that in earliest history man lived in a "state of nature." No government existed. Each man was only as secure as his own power and mental awareness could make him.

• English Bill of Rights
  1689

  Laws limited the rulers power. From Parliament to Prince William. Things like no suspending of Parliaments laws is an example of our checks and balances.

• The fundamentals orders of connecticut
  1639

  First constituion made in America. Made colonists believe in governing themselves instead of relying on a King.

• Mayflower compact
  Nov 11, 1620

  This reflected the idea that government should be based on a consensus of the entire community. Nowadays we also have majority rule with voting.

  Jul 30, 1619

  This meeting marked the first assembly of an elected legislature of representatives in English colonies.
