James Chadwick

1932

James Chadwick was a British physicist who proved that a nucleus also contains a neutron. A neutron is a nuetral, or no charge, particle that has almost the same mass as a proton.

Neils Bohr

1922

Bohr strengthened modern knowledge of the structure of the atom. He also worked on the Manhattan project (the first atomic bomb).

Discovery of the Proton

1918

In other experiements, Rutherford discovered that the inside the nucleus was a small particle called a proton. A proton has a charge of +1.

Robert Millikin

1909

Millikin was an American physicist who found that the charge of an electron (-1) and the mass equals 1/1840 the mass of the hydrogen atom.

Plum Pudding model of the Atom

1897

The man who discovered the electron, J.J. Thomspon, came up with the theory that electrons were similar to negatively charged "plums" in a positively charged "pudding". This proved that the whole a...

Wilhelm Roentgen

1895

Roentgen discovered a type of radiation called X-Rays. This form of radiation can pass through subject matter, like skin. In 1896, the first medical x-ray machine was used.

J.J. Thompson

1879

Thompson was a British physicist who discovered and named "electrons" after finding that the "cathode rays" were really negatively charged and they were smaller than an atom.

William Crookes

1875

Created the cathode ray tube, also known as the "Crookes tube" where cathode "rays" were found. When the tubes combined with a voltage, the rays could be observed streaming across the tube glowing ...

Ernest Rutherford

Jan 1, 1871

New Zealander who proved the plum pudding model of the atom to be untrue. He conducted the well-known "gold foil experiment" which proved that the atom must have a tiny, positively charged nucleus ...

Marie Curie

Jan 1, 1867

Marie Curie holds the record for winning 2 nobel prizes, one in physics and on in chemistry. She was a Polish scientist who coined the term, "radiation", to describe the unusual source of energy th...

John Dalton

Jan 1, 1766

John Dalton was a British schoolteacher who culminated the modern atomic theory by experimenting with the that all matter is composed of atoms, atoms of one element have the same size, mass and che...

Lavoisier

Jan 1, 1743

Lavoisier developed the Law of Conservation of Mass and the metric system, named Oxygen and Hydrogen and wrote the original list of elements. He was named, "Father of modern chemistry". Lavoisier w...

Alchemists (Jabir ibn Hayyan aka "Geber")

Jan 1, 700

Originally Alchemists were attempting to turn elements into gold. They were never successful, although "Gerber" was a prominent chemist who worked to establish experimental design.

Democritus

460 to Jan 1, 370

The first person to theorize that matter consists of small particles called atoms that can not be made, split or destroyed.

Aristotle

Jan 1, 384

Believed that matter was either air, fire, water, or earth. This is untrue, Democritus was correct.
