There is a common practice that seems to be a pattern that takes on mythical significance. And that is that last year's school budget expenditures with the exception of co-incidental changes dictate next year's curriculum and budget make-up. In February, celebrity British chef Jamie Oliver scooped up the prestigious TED Prize , awarded for his crusade "against obesity and other diet related diseases" and for having "pressured the UK government to invest $1 billion to overhaul school lunches to improve nutrition." Upon receiving the award, he warned America that it was committing national suicide through food. In an attempt to recreate his British school lunch campaign in the United States, Oliver is launching Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, a reality show that attempts to overhaul the school lunch regimen in America's unhealthiest city. But while food nags like Oliver and First Lady Michelle Obama are surely right that Americans need to eat better, is he right that our eating habits are killing us? And do we need a massive budget increase to introduce fresh foods and food education to our schools? Reason.tv's Michael C. Moynihan talked to food blogger and journalist Ed Bruske and Reason senior editor Katherine Mangu-Ward about school lunch reform, whether more government money could slim student waistlines, the United States Department of Agriculture's role in making kids fat, and whether young American really are, as Oliver claims, living shorter lives their parents and grandparents. Approximalely 7 minutes. Written by Moynihan. Shot and edited by Dan Hayes. Production assistant, Joshua Swain.
Nancy Pelosi For Abortion... Contraception In a January 25, 2009, interview with George Stephanopoulos for ABC News, Pelosi said, "Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."
The 57 members of the Rogue River Education Association have been working without a contract since July 2008. Their district is demanding pay freezes, even though recent years have shown astonishing budget carryovers. This is footage of a rally for RREA members that happened before a March 2010 school board meeting, and what happened in the meeting.
NEA President Dennis Van Roekel raised a red flag during testimony before a US House Appropriations Subcommittee because the Obama Administration's budget places states in the position of having to compete for funds during one of the worst financial crises in decades. He pointed out that this scenario fuels a system that means some kids will win and some kids will lose.
When a few reactionary tea baggers bus in a dozen protesters to LA from Utah and other redneck parts of the country for a small protest, the media is sure to cover it as a major political event. When tens of thousands (the LAPD stopped counting at 10000) of students protest in LA who are from LA there is no mention of the event in the entire corporate owned media. The call for action was against crippling state budget cuts to public education at the Universities, over $17 billion in two years to the state's education fund—and the UC administration's crisis of priorities was taken up on every UC and state college campus. The problem is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and state legislators who plan even more cuts as another $20 billion budget deficit approaches this year. The state's fiscal crisis is due to the states unwillingness, and inability, to raise revenue which has already taken its toll, and organizing has been underway leading up to the day of action on March 4th 2010. If the corporate tax cuts and shelters (all of which have only been put in place by the current administration) are repealed the State of California would have more than enough money to balance its budget and expand badly needed services including education and health care. Student fees at state schools have exploded by 182 percent since 2002. Education matters: the more basic, the more important it is to more people. We can't all be astrophysicists or nuclear engineers, but we all NEED to know how to read, how to balance a checkbook, and in my wildest dreams rattle off all 50 state capitals. If one cannot read, he can't navigate streets as all the signs look the same. That's how I felt when I heard that the budget due in two weeks is not going to be a "big give-away". The news came from no less an authority than the chancellor himself - speaking tonight to my BBC colleague Hugh Pym.
